"I cannot stand the Buckeyes, and having to live in Ohio and hear those people talk about their team, it drives me absolutely nuts . . . It's amazing to hear what those guys think about that university and what they think about that football program and (Ohio State coach Jim) Tressel and all the crap I gotta put up with being back there.
"I just can't wait for two years from now when SC comes to the 'Shoe and I get to hopefully, hopefully we'll have a home game that weekend and I can go up there and watch us pound on them in their own turf and kind of put all the talk to rest.
"Because I'm really getting sick of it and I just can't wait for this game to get here, so they can come out to the Coliseum and experience LA and get an old-fashioned Pac-10 butt-whoopin' and go back to the Big Ten . . . I can't wait."
Former USC QB Carson Palmer
"Here at Ohio State, they teach you to be a better man. There, it's just all about football."
OSU Receiver Ray Small comparing his USC recruiting visit with OSU
First of all, if this classifies as trash talk, these boys need to head to school to enroll in Trash Talking 101. These barely hit below the belt, maybe somewhere in the pectoral region.
Secondly do any of the USC or OSU players really need a reason to get pumped for this game? It's No. 1 versus No. 5. Traditional Pac-10 powerhouse versus traditional Big-10 powerhouse. O.J and Archie. Nuts versus Condoms.
The numerous Rose Bowl matches in the 1970s, often resulting in heartbreak for Buckeye fans, whose team needed the win to be voted No. 1.
When you go to a school like Southern Cal or Ohio State, you dream of playing in games like these.
While these comments may be posted on the bulletin board to pump up the punters, don't expect to see Rey Maualuga or James Laurinaitis foaming at the mouth while shotgunning a Red Bull. Those two will be amped beyond belief.
THE CHALKBOARD, WEEK 2
Well, while we're sniffing around the subject of trash...
It would appear Mark Mangino's buffet-busting buddy, Charlie Weis, is at it again: making headlines for something other than doing a good coaching job.
"Then we'll listen to Michigan have all their excuses as they come running in and saying how they have a new coaching staff and there's changes. To hell with Michigan," Weis stated to a crowd of Notre Dame supporters at a luncheon last April.
Now Charlie is saying it was an ode, a tribute if you will, to former Michigan coaching legend Bo Schembechler.
Puuuhhlease! Are you kidding me? Who cares? You said it, stand by it! Don't retract, shoot, if anything...pile it on!
This week I'd like us all to share a moment of silence for:
The Big East and ACC, may they get respectable soon
Pat White's Heisman Campaign
The ticket brokers who nearly had heart attacks when realizing Ohio State just might blow the marquee status of the big game in L.A, and lose to OU
The conversation about the flag thrown on Jake Locker, may we all just stop talking about it?
Marquee Matchups In Week 3
No. 5 Ohio State at No. 1 USC 8PM ABC
In case you were unaware, there is a big game this week in L.A. Will USC destroy the Bucks like the world says they will? Maybe Tressel was playing close to the vest and meant for that OU game to go the way it did?
Okay, I'll go back to drooling on my pillow now.
No. 13 Kansas at No. 19 South Florida 8PM ESPN2
It's Friday Night Football, as the Jayhawks try to prove that last year was no Cinderella season. USF was in a tight one last week against in-state foe UCF. Maybe they were just looking ahead? (A theme this week?)
No. 10 Wisconsin at No. 21 Fresno State 10:30PM ESPN 2
The type of games that the Bulldogs thrive in. Sometimes it's close but no cigar, a la USC a few years back. So far Wisconsin has put up a very un-Badger like 89 points in just two games. If the Badger D can't stop the 'Dogs, expect an Ole West-style shootout.
Intriguing Match-Ups/ Upsets To Look Out For
No. 2 Georgia at South Carolina 3:30PM CBS
It's never easy to go on the road in the SEC. Especially when the opposing coach is a visor-throwing guru. But when you've got an Olympic hurdling running back in your corner, and you're the Georgia Bulldogs, it's not AS difficult.
UCLA at No. 18 BYU 3:30PM
After a week of hearing about how they almost lost a game, and dropped in the polls for something that wasn't their fault, the Cougars have to regain focus for another Pac-10 opponent. Ricky N' and the Bruins will look to take a lot of momentum into conference play if they can knock off another ranked team.
No. 16 Oregon at Purdue 3:30PM ABC
Ross-Ade Stadium is no Autzen Stadium, but the Boiler faithful can get boisterous when needed. Purdue typically has a game where they shock someone every year. It used to be shocking when they beat Notre Dame. Not so much anymore.
As I sit here in the Minneapolis airport about to depart for L.A., I reflect on two things:
1) Why did I almost put the Auburn vs. Mississippi State game on my upset watch? Don't you do it to me, Croom!
2) Is USC really as good as they appeared in Week 1? If so, at least I have this to look forward to:
