I am interrupting my busy day of signing petitions to save the prarie dogs and to stop hunting wolves in Alaska in airplanes, to write this article.
Somehow in my time with my laptop today, I came upon an article by Jon Lane "Matt Serra: I Want to Retire Matt Hughes." All MMA fans should read it.
As a big Matt Serra fan who rues the day when fate put him in the octagon opposite Georges St. Pierre rather than Matt Hughes after UFC TUF 4 "The Comeback," I am more than ready for the culmination of the bitter "blood feud" between the two Matts.
If only this could have happened immediately after "The Comeback."
At that time GSP and Serra were aligned against Matt Hughes, and I felt, with good reason. Both fighters are my favorites and I loved the thought of them being good friends with a common cause.
The belittling remarks and bullying behavior that Hughes demonstrated on TUF 4 was continued in TUF 6, when he coached opposite Matt Serra and continued to pretend to take "the religious high road" while continuing the same despicable and destructive behavior he had exhibited in TUF 4.
Consequently, since I especially hate "religious bullies" who hide behind the Bible, I really, really want to see Hughes cut down to size. My weapon of choice is of course, the sharp-tongued New Jersey native Matt "the Terra" Serra.
Of course if Matt Hughes fears "the Terra" he is keeping his terror well hidden. Not long ago he was saying how his wife and children even want him to beat Serra up, supposedly for having such a foul unbridled mouth when speaking of the head of their household.
Since I feel Serra "calls a spade a spade," I don't believe he has said anything that Hughes doesn't deserve (in spades, I would say). Thank goodness for Serra's outspoken nature.
In Lane's article he quotes Serra calling Hughes a "one trick pony." referring to Hughes' dependence on his wrestling skills to put his opponents down on the mat. This would be a very good position for Serra to find himself in, as he is a Gracie black belt in BJJ and has stated that he hasn't even begun to reach his peak in the sport yet.
Having two schools in New York where he teaches "Serra Jiu-Jitsu" ( Huntington and East Meadows), he is considering opening a third school soon with his brother and partner Nick.
Soon he will be even busier in another new enterprise of fatherhood, as his wife of over a year, Ann is three months pregnant. How wonderful for them!
Matt Hughes has stated he has one fight left in him before he leaves his shoes on the mat for good. The fight with Serra should be the last one, and as much as he would like to go out on a win I predict it will not happen.
After all the jokes Hughes has made about the two inch shorter Serra, he does deserve to meet retirement at Serra's hands.
I am betting that this is exactly what fate has in store for him.

Im very pleased this subject is finally being breached again. There are definitely two very defined sides to this argument and the people on either side are adament that their man should and will win if this comes to pass. I for one lean towards the Terra. I had seen Matt S fight before but truly became a fan when he was a fighter on the TUF series and he called out the trainer over his views of the Hughes Gracie fight. Thats a style I emulate in my life bieng direct and outspoken and beleiving what I say. I was a fan instantly. I like you want nothing more than to see Mr Serra beat Hughes. I feel Hughes is krass, pompous, and extremely annoying no matter the talent level. He reminds me of the kid in school who started every sport and rubbed it in your face because he was so much better than you. Overall Matt Serra is more a people person in my opinion. A real person not a superstar like Hughes likes to paint himself. I will wait anxiously for the announcement of this fight and hope that it happens ending in a Matt Hughes tapout if things go my way.

Actually I would love a KO like Liddell received from Rashad, but I will settle for a submission and hope like with GSP, it is a verbal one, which I think is much more humiliating.

I look forward to this fight, I wonder how long it will take for this to happen?

Maybe at the January show with GSP and Penn. That would be especially satisfying, don't you think?

I think Serra has more tools than Hughes. The biggest advantage that Hughes has is that Serra is really a lightweight while Hughes could actually make 185. Other than that and wrestling, Serra has better balance, jitz, stand-up and grappling.

Dorothy, you don't fit the stereotype or 18-24 y/o male demographic of a typical MMA fan. I think that is a great sign for my favorite sport. Now, can you work to convince John McCain, that it is not human cockfighting?

Ooooow, I wouldn't dare bother him now that he is in a fight for his political life. I do thinkhe is resigned to MMA staying around, and was happy that there are rules and regulations in place--you don't find that in cock fighting. I am too close to his age to matter much to him anyway.

Haha yeah right to whoever thinks that little punk Matt Serra can beat Matt Hughes. Matt Hughes is the best welterweight thqt ever wore the belt. Only reason he lost to Thiago and GSP is because they are yong prime fighters that have reached their peak where as he is about to put up th gloves. Ofcourse after he has accomplished so much, Serra is no match for Matt Hughes. Hughes outclasses him, out submits him, out fights him in genereal. If they ever do finaly meet, Matt Hughes will massacre Matt Serra

Au contrer, I must disagree! Matt Serra has been teaching martial arts and has two successful schools. Matt Hughes has opened his own gym in Granite City, Il. and has been on a downward turn ever since leaving Pat Miletich. It is not as easy as it looks to be a successful coach, and some never will make the transition from fighter to coach.
Believe me Serra will win. He is only one year younger than Hughes, but is so much wiser. Hughes got much more credit during his career than he deserved just b/c he was a fan and Dana favorite. Serra has not gotten his due yet, but when he beats Hughes, if there is a God in heaven, he will.

Matt has very little striking skill--who has he ever knocked out? Matt Serra was the first Graccie black belt in America and teaches BJJ, has two gyms and has taught since the age of 19. Matt Hughes just opened a gym in Granite City, Illinois, Hughes Intensive Training, but has not improved since he left Pat Mlletich's gym in Iowa. Hughes hasn't got a chance, but you are welcome to your opinion.

I agree 100% with you Dorothy, I HATE Matt Hugues... now I know, hate is a bit rough but... I HATE Matt Hugues. I'm actually a big Matt Serra fan and would like very much to see him retire Hugues in his last fight. I think Serra has better hands and much better Jiu-Jitsu so like you say, Hugues only chance of winning is his wrestling and ground and pound. Anyway, can't wait for the fight and I hope to god that Matt Serra beats Matt Hugues into bloody oblivion.

I know Paul Georgieff personally, who was on Team Hughes during TUF 6. He said that Hughes didn't really teach his team anything, and that he tried to purposely injure Dorion Price during one workout.

Hughes appeared to injure more than one of his guys and was more interested in teaching the Bible than actually coaching his team--and then got angry with them for not winning. Some coach!
I am surprised that he didn't try to baptize his guys in the hot tub.
Hopefully the fight with Serra will let Mr. Hughes identify more strongly with the trials of Job than Esther the Queen.
Tell Paul "Hi !" from this old girl. He deserves a medal for putting up with Hughes. And please ask who he thinks will win the fight.
