Come to Think of it...Cubs Need a Tirade from Lou

Bob WarjaSep 5, 2008

The thought suddenly came over me.  What if the Cubs streak keeps growing and growing, frustrations continue to build and the pressure mounts. What if the Cubs don't win another game this season?

As preposterous as that may seem, they certainly don't look like they could beat anyone right now. Even Cincinnati, minus Dunn and Griffey, as bad as they are, had no problem beating the Cubs Friday night at the Great American Ballpark.

Look, don't think it can't happen. As unlikely as it is, with each loss, the team loses a little confidence in itself. Combine that with a mostly road schedule against winning teams, and who knows?

I recall one year when Mike Ditka was still coaching the Bears, it was his last year in Chicago, in fact. Anyway, at a post game conference, he made the statement that "this team may not win another game".  And sure enough, they didn't. Of course, Lou isn't likely to say something like that. But the point is, things can escalate and snowball very quickly.

The Cubs have now lost six consecutive games, five of them at home. They continue to leave baserunners stranded, make errors and have inconsistent pitching. Ted Lilly wasn't sharp tonight, to say the least.

It's like this is not the real Cubs, but some impostors who have kidnapped our heroes and are out there wearing their uniforms. Or, if they weren't making the kind of money they are, you might suspect they are suddenly on the take, losing games on purpose.

Maybe it's time for Lou to explode.  Perhaps we need one of his patented blowups, just to let us know they care, if nothing else. So, go ahead, Lou, rip out a base, kick up some dirt, throw a few water coolers on the field.  Whatever it takes. It's worked before as a motivator, why not try it again?

I know I'd like to see DP-Lee show some anger when he strikes out or hits into a double play with men on base. Same with Ramirez when he commits yet another error at third base.

Come on, Cubs, get mad...let that frustration out.  Or, here's an even better idea: start playing the kind of ball you did for most of the year prior to this losing streak.

Come to think of it...if we're going to go down, let's go down swinging.
