I'd Rather Get Beat Up In an Alley- Preseason OFF!

The most unbelievable offseason in any Jets fan’s memory is over leaving a mysterious new emotion in its wake.  Hope.  There’s also a little fear mixed in there.  Where once there was a salary spurned patchwork offensive line there is now a veteran yet somehow youthful secret service agency entrenched around our quarterback.  That quarterback position, which began the preseason as a question mark with a red shirt on, is now manned by a battle tested field with something to prove.  He does not have a rag for an arm.  He also has had just about a month to learn a freakishly complicated offense.

It’s hard for Jets fans not to expect the worst.  I’m so worried that Favre is going to get smacked around that I’ve almost convinced myself the Dolphins won’t miss Jason Taylor and Zach Thomas.  I’ve also somehow become afraid of Ricky Williams for God’s sake.  Ridiculous.  Irrational.  The Dolphins were 1-15 with their defensive superstars.  Is Chad Pennington going to step in and tear the Jets’ defense apart?  Did Parcells go in and give a him a cyborg titanium rotator cuff?

Hell hath no fury like a Chadwick scorned.

I’m sure Chad has lots of motivation and he’s seen the Jets defensive schemes for years.  On the other side of the ball, you don’t think Kerry Rhodes or Shaun Ellis are ready to unleash some frustration upon Pennington?  Over the years there have been countless trips to the red zone ending in field goals or turnovers.  There were many Sunday afternoons where Chad’s inability to move the chains resulted in the defense being forced to play a majority of the game.

Go Get em boys!  He’s not wearing the “Hands off” practice jersey any more.  This game is a must win.  If we can’t stop our own backup QB and his commitment challenged Rastafarian running back we’re in trouble when Brady comes to town in week 2.

As if Brett Favre isn’t inspiring enough, Mike Westhoff is back with the Jets.  We’ll have to wait and see whether he’s on the sidelines or in the coaches booth but this is good news either way.  Our special teams unit is the only one that resembled professional tackle football last season and it just got better.
