Richard Collier, 26, of the Jacksonville Jaguars was shot early Tuesday morning and sustained life threatening injuries.
Jacksonville's Sheriff's Office reports that the motive behind the shooting is unclear. Collier was waiting outside of an apartment along with Kenneth Pettway who was released by the Jaguars. They were waiting for some women to come out when a gunman opened fire on the vehicle.
Collier was shot several times and is now in Shands Jacksonville Medical Center.
Pettway was not injured in the shooting.
Collier had an drunken driving incident last fall, but chose to plead no contest earlier this year to keep from going to trial and putting the team and himself through all of the negative attention. He received six months probation for pleading no contest.
Collier's problems make Fred Taylor arrest early Saturday morning seem minuscule.
Taylor was arrested around 4 am Saturday morning in front of Club Cristal and charged with disorderly conduct.
He was not taken in, but was arrested and released on his own recognizance. Taylor agreed to appear in court at a later date.
The current Jaguars are facing problems, but they are not alone.
Former Jaguar Jimmy Smith was arrested on Friday Night in a separate incident on a drunken driving charge in Jacksonville, FL.
Smith attempted to drive around a DUI checkpoint Friday night. When the officers stopped him to search his vehicle, they smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle.
After searching the vehicle, they found an open container of beer along with marijuana butts in the console.
Smith failed a field sobriety test. He was also charged with possession of marijuana less than 20 grams and open container. Both are misdemeanors.
Smith was released on Saturday after posting bail at $503.
The Jaguars have some issues to deal with on both sides of the ball on the field, but now they have some very serious issues to handle off of the field as well.
The Jaguars' open their season in Tennessee this Sunday.
