College Football Season to Hot to Handle

Kevin McGradyAug 31, 2008

Ā Ā Ā Ā  Week one of the college football season only settled how unsettled this season is likely to be. The usual first week of mishaps and mistakes lived up to its reputation. Many good football teams either lost or brushed by an inferior opponent due to lack of intensity or mistakes. There were a few teams that came repared to play and they are the early picks to top the polls.

Ā Ā Ā Ā  Southern California looked like a well prepared wrecking crew while destroying Virginia. They showed little or no weak points in a team that could make Miami this year. As usual their worst enemy is themselves. They should roll over Ohio State in two weeks and the rest of their schedule is doable on their worst day.

Ā Ā Ā Ā  Oklohoma looked like a mid-season team in their first contest. They are prepared and talented and should handle their schedule in a conference that is not as strong as it has been. If they hold off Texas, they should have a bright season. I pick them to wind up in the top ten and play in a BCS Bowl.

Ā Ā Ā Ā  LSU looked OK in their opener. They were obviously the faster, stronger, more talented team. They did have a few first game jitters but handled them well. They will have a good season but will likely not be in Miami.

They have to play Alabama and Auburn and both, while less talented, have shown themselves more controlled and disciplined in contest such as these. They likely will not get through both and might not get through either. They will likely wind up in the top ten and play in a BCS bowl.

Ā Ā Ā Ā  Florida came out and obviously worked on their ground game. They destroyed Hawaii in what was little more than a dress rehearsal for their SEC schedule. They do not play their nemesis Auburn in the regular season and will likely be too high-powered on offense for Georgia to handle. I like them in Atlanta to decide the SEC.

Ā Ā Ā Ā  Alabama showed up in Atlanta well-drilled and prepared, and defeated a Clemson team that had better talent according to most. The Tide is back and will cause Miles and Tubberville to lose sleep in the SEC West.

They have to play LSU, Georgia, and Auburn, and if they win all three, it will cap a near miraculous turn around. I believe they will likely win one of the three and wind up in the top fifteen and a major bowl.

Ā Ā Ā Ā  Missouri did not look impressive in its opener against Illinois and showed no defense through out the contest. They will likely make only a minor bowl and will finish in the top twenty five.

Ā Ā Ā Ā  Texas did not look all that impressive in their opener. They played an undisciplined team and proved they had better talent and slightly more discipline. The did put one in the W column and that counts. They will win up in the top twenty-five and play in a minor bowl.

Ā Ā Ā Ā  Georgia rolled over Georgia Southern in their opener. They showed much potential and will end the season in the top fifteen. They have to get by Auburn and Florida and will likely only be up to the task one time. I pick Florida to nip them out in the SEC East and go on to the Conference Championship Game.

Ā Ā Ā Ā  Auburn looked great on defense and rusty on offense in their opener. This brings back memories of last year's performance. If anything. the defense looks better than last year's.

The offense was slightly better and looked to have potential at times that was totally lacking last season. If the offense continues like it is with slight improvements, Auburn will likely make Atlanta with only a loss to Georgia on the way.

If the offense realizes its potential, Auburn will run the schedule and shoot itĀ out with Florida undefeated. Either way, I think they have the best chance to win the SEC West. The winner of that game will likely play Southern California or an undeserving Ohio State for the BCS Championship.

Should be Top Ten Teams Now

Southern California

Florida

Oklohoma

Georgia

Auburn

LSU

Alabama

Ohio State

Misouri

West Virginia

These are just the top ten in my opinion and not necessarily in that order.
