What to Look For: WEC36 Urijah Faber vs. Mike Brown

Jaime MorenoAug 31, 2008

For this installment of "What to Look For," I will be looking at a very big card for the fine folks at WEC. On Sept. 10, there will be two titles on the line and a number of solid fights that will be important to the contender landscape. So, with out further ado...

PRELIMINARY CARD

There are a couple of names to look for in the prelims. First, Alex Schoenauer will be making his debut for the WEC. Schoenauer is a TUF alumni from the first season and has been making a name for himself in the IFL. If he can preform in the WEC like he did in the IFL then there could be some good things coming from him.

A matchup between Johny Hendricks and Alex Serdyukov could be a very good one. Serdyukov has had good success in the WEC with five wins; however, Hendricks is a young and very dangerous fighter. Hendircks, along with Jake Rosholt, fight for Team Takedown, which trains at some nice camps in Vegas (Xtreme Couture, Cobra Kai, Master Toddy's). Look for Hendricks to try for some submissions, mainly because Serdyukov's only losses have come via tapout.

MAIN CARD

Champ Urijah Faber vs. Mike Brown (for featherweight title)

Anytime we as fans get the  opportunity to see Urijah Faber, then it's a great night. In this episode of the Urijah Faber show, we get to see him fight a very game Mike Brown. Brown is a very good fighter with some soild wins over some proven names like Yves Edwards, Joe Lauzon, and Mark Hominick. Although I'd love to say the Faber will get an easy win, I think that it will be a hard fought battle early, but Faber will get the win in the end. Urijah Faber via TKO in the third.

Champ Paulo Filho vs. Chael Sonnen (for middleweight title)

The rematch between Paulo Filho and Chael Sonnen is much-anticipated; however, I don't think that it will be as exciting as the first fight. Paulo Filho will not allow himself to thought of as a lucky fighter. Yes Sonnen dominated the first 9:55, but that was then. Filho will come out way more aggressive in this fight and will be looking for an early ending. Filho will wins this fight easily, I guarantee. Paulo Filho via armbar late in the first.

Leonard Garcia vs. Jens Pulver

This fight has "fight of the night" written all over it. We all know what Jens can do, but Garcia is what makes this fight so exciting. He is a great ground specialist who is more then willing to keep it standing, and he can more then take a punch. Whether or not he can take Lil Evil's punch is a different story. Garcia needs this win to have a shot at Faber, so we could see a more determined Garcia take it to the ground early and try for the submission. It comes down to Jens using his takedown defense and keep it standing, plan and simple, if he does that then its his fight to lose. Jens Pulver via unanoumus decision.

Jake Rosholt vs. Danillo Villefort

Now I don't really understand why this fight is on the main card. However what I do know about them is that both had little experience, but both train with some of the best. Villefort is a American Top Team fighter and Rosholt as I stated before fights with Team Takedown. This is going to be a technical ground fight with Villefort's main way of victory being submission and Rosholt being a former NCAA wrestling champion. I think that Villefort has the edge with experience so I'll give him the nod. Villefort via armbar in the first.

Donald Cerrone vs. Rob McCullough

"Razor" Rob is looking to be on the winning track after a lose to Jamie Varner and a boring win over Kenneth Alexander. Before the lost to Varner, Rob had been on a nine fight win streak. If he wants to fight for his title again this fight needs to be a big one for him. His problem is that "Cowboy" Donald Cerrone isn't a push over. He is 8-0 with all of his fights coming by submission. At the end Razor Rob's standup will be to much for Cerrone. Razor Rob McMullough wins by TKO in the second.
