UFC: Two Big Names = One Super Fight

Dorothy WillisAug 30, 2008

The names of the number one fighters of today on my list are: Fedor, Anderson Silva, and Georges St. Pierre.

Okay, I hear some people in the background yelling "But what about BJ Penn?"

Go ahead and yell. BJ is not on my list.

Lately every MMA fan and his brother is obsessed with what are being called " super-fights," meaning fights between two of the number one fighters.

Maybe that is why BJ was so quick to dash into he ring after GSP beat Jon Fitch to propose a fight; that he would not have to feel "left out" if Georges decided to challenge Anderson Silva first and not him.

So if people call Georges' fight with BJ Penn a super-fight, fine, but I will save the term for later--after Georges beats BJ.

After all, if BJ was sincere and wanted to be "the best fighter of all time", he would have called out Anderson instead of Georges.

I am sure that from BJ's perspective, Georges is less threatening to him since he has himself convinced that he had beaten Georges the first time they fought, but he is only fooling himself.

BJ was the more experienced and decorated fighter when he and Georges met the first time, but BJ knows what a lazy slacker he was about his nutrition and training at that period in time.

Now that he has buckled down and dedicated himself to eating right and better training, he thinks he will have it made. From the response I always get from the BJ crowd, I am sure that they feel the same way that their little emperor does.

Not one of that crowd will acknowledge that Georges has transcended "normal" and gone into another dimension completely.

BJ doesn't stand a chance, unless of course he plans to strike Georges blind; I certainly would not put it past him. It almost worked the first time and won him one round out of three, so I bet the little Buddha tries it again.

For a real fight of the true superpowers though, I believe a fight between Georges and Anderson Silva will be "the Big One" and maybe "the Fight of the Ages."

Even in the event that Patrick Cote wins the title in October at UFC 90 (and I am praying that he does), I would still consider a fight between Georges and Anderson to be a worthy super-match-up.

In some way they seem like mirror images of each other skill and ability wise.

Of course there are physical differences to account for, such as Anderson's height and reach advantage. And also, I am not sure at what weight they should consider fighting.

What I do know is that they match up evenly in being athletic, beautiful physical specimens with superior martial arts abilities. To me this is the most important factor.

And what a relief that the fight would sell itself with no need for trash talk or hype.

The only hard part would be in predicting the winner.
