Who Will Be the Next WVU Coach?

After what most people thought would be a short search to name a new head football coach for the WVU football program, everything has come to a quick halt because of a phone call from college football icon Bobby Bowden.

It seemed that University of Florida assistant coach Doc Holliday had all but stepped up to the podium and accept the gig to lead the Mountaineers—until Bowden placed a call to WV Governor Joe Manchin to plead his case for his son Terry.

This call must have been some serious conversation, because now it seems that the race is wide open again.

West Virginia is a proud state that loves its Mountaineers, and needs to get a head coach in place soon for muitiple reasons—the Fiesta Bowl, recruiting, and just the peace of mind of knowing that the Coach Rod era is over.

Doc Holliday seems to be a great fit. He spent 17 years as a WVU assissant under Don Nehlen, is well schooled in the spread offense, and is also a great recruiter, with strong Florida ties.

Terry Bowden has been out of coaching for over 10 years—but has been in television, and should still have a good feel for how the college game is played and coached.

As a whole, I think many WVU fans are worried about his 10-year layoff, but for now a phone call from daddy may have keep the race alive long enough for Terry to possibly move even with—or even ahead of the other canidates.

Now that it's no longer a closed case, maybe Jimbo Fisher—WV native—could get back in the mix, but WVU would have to pony up and pay FSU his $2.5 million buy-out.

I dont think that will happen—but after all, it is the giving season, and with all the recent crazy coaching shenanigans, who really knows? We will just have to wait and see.
