In Need of Ted Nolan: Chris Simon's Cry for Help

IconIt's no secret that Chris Simon has led a troubled life.

We all have our demons. It's just that Simon's are on public display as a result of his chosen profession.

During his tenure with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in the OHL, Simon had a full time counselor in Ted Nolan.

Simon was on a path of self-destruction in his early days with the team—he was known to get drunk and trash the odd hotel room, and was known on the ice as someone not to reckon with.

He was fortunate enough to have a coach, in Nolan, who could understand where he was coming from.

Both Nolan and Simon are Native Canadians, and Ted knew the difficulties faced by a young native growing up in a white man's world. Ted had to break down barriers in the NHL, and had to listen to the slanderous taunts of the fans reminding him of his heritage.

He pressed on, with his mother's words echoing in his mind. He always remained a true professional—and with his insight and example was able to set Simon upon the straight and narrow.

That was then.

This is now.

Is it too late for Chris Simon? Will Ted be able to set a wayward man straight again?

I certainly hope so.

If you ever meet Chris Simon, you'll be very surprised as to how soft-spoken he is. He's also grateful to be able to have a chance to play in the NHL.

When I spoke with him after learning he was going to the Quebec Nordiques, Simon said, "It's an excellent opportunity."

He was more right than he knew. After the Nordiques moved to Colorado, Simon won a Stanley Cup in 1996.

As I see it, it's time for Ted Nolan to stage an intervention with Simon. I don't feel Chris should be kicked out of the league just yet.

Chris Pronger has had seven suspensions, and he's still allowed to play. He kicked Calgary's Ville Nieminen in 2004. He was also suspended for violent stick work. And who can forget the head-hunting incident in the 2007 playoffs?

I just hope Simon gets the help he needs—lest he forget he's representing his heritage for younger players.
