Dimitar Berbatov: Five Reasons Why Spurs Should Let Him Leave

Radoslav IvanovAug 25, 2008

The greatest and longest transfer saga this summer has definitely been Dimitar Berbatov’s. He has even surpassed Cristiano Ronaldo’s talks about his biggest dream, namely to play for Real Madrid.

Is it surprising that Manchester United played a major role in both cases? I will leave that for you to decide. Regardless, here are five reasons why Tottenham should let Berbatov leave for Manchester this week:

He Is Too Good for Tottenham

Let’s face it: Spurs did not impress at all in their first two games of the season. Without Berba, they lost to Middlesbrough and Sunderland, teams that will definitely not finish in the top 10. What is the point in staying in a team that only do well when you are playing?

Berbatov is ambitious, and he only stayed at White Hart Lane last summer because he was told that Spurs would be fighting for a place in the Champions League. And what did they do? They won the Carling Cup after beating Arsenal’s and Chelsea’s youngsters and finished 11th in the Premier League. Rather disappointing, don’t you think?

Now that the best team in Europe is willing to pay so much money for him, it is natural that he wants to leave.

There Is a Mutual Dislike

At the moment, Berba does not want to stay, and Spurs do not want to keep him. True, it was Berbatov himself who created this tight situation with his refusal to play, but he is human, like everyone else.

The same thing happened to Ronaldo at the end of last season. He missed three penalties in a row, then rumors started spreading about his great desire to leave United. Finally, he asked the media to stop discussing the matter until the Euros were over so he could concentrate on his game.

So, even if Berba does stay, he will need at least two months to recover his mental calmness, by which time winter transfer talks will have started again.

Spurs Lied to Him and the Entire World

At the beginning of the transfer window, Levi said that Berbatov was worth Ā£30 million,Ā  and any team who offered that much money could have him. However, once Manchester United expressed their interest, Tottenham raised the Bulgarian’s price. By what kind of moral code is this policy honest?

There could only be two reasons for this sudden change—either Spurs want to get as much money for him as they can, the way they did with Carrick, Keane, etc., or they do not want to let Berba leave.

In any case, being dishonest and not true to your word is not the way. How can Spurs expect Berbatov to be loyal when they keep lying to him?

Pure Gratitude

Even though, as Roy Keane said, no one is greater than any club, the club should also show some appreciation of its players. Berbatov has undoubtedly been Tottenham’s best player for the last two seasons.

Because of his and Robbie Keane’s good play, Spurs still play in the UEFA Cup and are still in the Premier League, so to speak.

Besides, during these two years he did not say a single word about leaving or betraying Tottenham. Now that Berba has finally expressed his greatest dream, Juande Ramos will not let him play at all because ā€œhe has mental problems.ā€

Well, that is what I call gratitude.

Berba’s Wish

Much has been said recently about football players being slaves and not being able to play in the teams they want. I do not want to discuss this issue here because I will need another several paragraphs for that, but I do want to say that a player’s wish should be respected, in the very least.

After all, no one can play well if he does not want to.

So, Spurs should carefully think about what is the right decision to make. Is it better to keep the Bulgarian, but fear that he might refuse to play in any given game? Or does it make sense to take the £28 million, buy Forlan (for example), and spend the rest of it on a few good midfielders in the winter?

They have only five days to decide.
