Camping World East Series Preview

Mary Jo BuchananAug 23, 2008

The Camping World East series has moved to the heart of Ohio, racing this evening in the Mansfield 150. Twenty-six drivers showed up for the event.

There was a 90-minute practice session led by Jeffrey Earnhardt, heir to the DEI racing throne as grandson of the late Dale Earnhardt, Sr. Jeff had the quickest lap at 16.363 and was the only driver to break the 110 miles per hour mark.

Matt Kobyluck, current championship points leader, was fifth fastest in practice. Other notables were Richard Childress' grandson Austin Dillon, who was sixth fastest, and Andy Santerre Motorsports driver Peyton Sellers, who was ninth fastest.

Steve Park, former Sprint Cup series winner, was pleased with his session, as he wound up eighth. He hopes to celebrate not only a good finish, but his 41st birthday today as well.

But the story of the day so far from Mansfield is the pole sitter Trevor Bayne.  He set a new track record with a lap of 16.439. This will be Trevor's second pole of the season.

Although Bayne looks very strong, there is one tall, quiet driver lurking just behind him. Championship points leader Matt Kobyluck qualified in the fourth position and will be gunning for his nemesis as quickly as he can.

The top 15 qualifying order for the race is as follows:

1. Trevor Bayne

2. Jeffrey Earnhardt

3. Brian Ickler

4. Matt Kobyluck

5. Steve Park

6. Derek Thorn

7. Kevin Swindell

8. Jesus Hernandez

9. Jody Lavender

10. Craig Goess

11. Peyton Sellers

12. Austin Dillon

13. Ricky Carmichael

14. Jamie Hayes

15. Ryan Duff

The No. 05 car of Guy Pavageau did not attempt to qualify, but will start the race in the back of the pack.

So, will the driver in second place in the championship chase be victorious?  Or will Matt Kobyluck make it five in a row?  My prediction is that Peyton Sellers will have a strong race and take Andy Santerre Motorsports to victory lane later this evening.

Tune in later for the race results!
