Cale Gale Hauls the Mail in Nationwide Series Qualifying

Mary Jo BuchananAug 22, 2008

Cale Gale, driving the Camping World car for Kevin Harvick Inc. (KHI)Ā in the Nationwide series, qualified for his first ever pole in the series.Ā

Gale began racing in 1988 at the age of four when his father put him in a go kart.Ā  The following year, he was in full competition mode at the Mobile Motorsports Park in Alabama.

He has progressed the "usual" way, driving stock cars and late models.Ā  But he took a detour in 2005 when he moved to South Carolina and became a shock specialist for Phoenix Racing, owned by James Finch.Ā

Finch gave the young man a chance to do some testing for his team and the rest is history.Ā  Gale then "graduated" to driving in the ARCA, Busch and Truck series.Ā Ā  Kevin Harvick spotted the young driver's talents and he has moved quickly into making more "regular" appearances in the Nationwide series under the KHI banner.

While Cale Gale got it done out on the race track, it was two fans that really saved the day for him.Ā  Gale’s car was parked on pit road in its rightful first position when it broke free and started rolling toward the pit wall.Ā  Two quick thinking fans threw their arms out and "caught" the car before it hit and did any serious damage.

Gale was quickest in qualifying, but Dario Franchitti also had a great lap, claiming the second position for the race start.Ā  Greg Biffle, Elliott Sadler and Scott Wimmer rounded out the top five in starting positions.

As in the Cup qualifying session, several Nationwide series cars broke free on the turns and hit the walls hard.Ā  Most notably was Steven Wallace, Rusty's son, who was on a fast run before wiping out dramatically.Ā  Brad Keselowski, driving for Dale Earnhardt, Jr., also took a wicked spin around the track in his qualifying lap.

The cars are now impounded and will sit silently on pit road awaiting the start of the race.Ā Ā  Cale Gale has hauled the mail in qualifying but we will have to await the drop of the checkered flag to see if Cale Gale will indeed prevail!
