Is this a joke?
No disrespect to Usain Bolt, who I personally truly admire.
But dude, you are no Michael Phelps. Not even close.
Over the course of the last week or so, I've heard that Phelps' performance has "overshadowed" other stories, and that Bolt is actually the superior athlete, and that Phelps is less of a man for swimming.
Alrighty...let's take it easy now.
First off, Phelps is just as much of an athlete as Bolt is. For every race that Bolt would smash Phelps in, Phelps would destroy Bolt just as badly in the pool. So to imply that Bolt is more of a man because he does his thing on land instead of water is ridiculous.
Secondly, I've heard that Bolt is facing tougher competition, since "everybody can walk" but Phelps is just facing people that can swim. That's a horrendous argument. For every country that trains their runners for running at a breakneck pace, there's a school or training center that is training young swimmers from the age of a toddler.
Third of all, some people are saying "Bolt only trained for the 100 for a couple of months". Whoop-de-freakin-doo. Bolt ran half of the 200, which he trains for 24/7/365. Phelps swims different strokes in the pool. That's even more difficult. It'd be like if Bolt shattered the world records in the 100 and 200, running frontward, backward, and skipping.
Lastly, let's just look at straight up performances here. Yeah, Bolt won two golds and broke two world records. That is awesome. And I mean that. It really is. He's a phenomenal athlete.
But COME ON. EIGHT IS MORE THEN TWO. Phelps crushed seven world records, and won eight gold medals. Phelps won four times as more gold medals. Are you joking me? How is that NOT more impressive? I don't care if you are the best at reading eight times over. That's insane.
I've heard some people say that Phelps is getting love because he's white. And to that, I say shut the f*** up. That is flat out ridiculous and stupid. I don't care what color an Olympian is, if he can win eight medals, much less eight golds.
Is the "Redeem Team", who carries no white players, only getting attention because it's a team of black guys? No way! They're some of the best and most amazing athletes in the world, and deserve their love. And so does Phelps.
So stop disrespecting a legend, and appreciate what you're watching!! Decades, even centuries from now, the story of Michael Phelps will be told to disbelieving children that cannot fathom an Olympian that dominant. I wish the world would truly realize what we're watching.
