Washington Redskins: As Trade Deadline Looms, Will Albert Haynesworth Be Dealt?

Josh McCainOct 19, 2010

As the trade deadline in the NFL looms at 4:00 PM EST a lot of people in Redskins Nation are wondering if Albert Haynesworth will still be on the roster.

It has been obvious since before the start of training camp that Haynesworth was never going to buy into coach Mike Shanahan's system or the 3-4 defense installed by defensive coordinator Jim Hasslett.

There were even rumors that Haynesworth was offered in the trade that brought Donovan McNabb to D.C., but Philly said, "Thanks, but no thanks.  We've had our share of headaches this decade."

And of course there were rumors of possibly sending him back to Tennessee.

Don't forget the rumor of a possible three-team trade, sending Albert to an undisclosed location to get the draft pick(s) needed to pry Vincent Jackson away from San Diego, but "The Lord of No Rings" A.J. Smith killed it.

So the real question is, will Haynesworth be dealt by the deadline today?

Honestly I doubt it.  I hope something gets done—heck I'll take a fourth-rounder just to get the distraction out of town.

It may or may not be a distraction for the players, but as a fan I am really tired of hearing about Haynesworth and the amount of playing time he gets.

And even though a lot of people are starting to turn on the coach in the situation, I have to say Shanahan is in the right.

After all what else can he do?

The guy just got a $20 million check, and the most a team can fine a player at one time is $10 thousand.

So that isn't going to faze him. The only thing that will speak volumes is benching him.

But I'm getting off topic here.

The distraction has become too much now for this team, and honestly the defense is about the same with or without Haynesworth so why not ship him out?

There is no way the Redskins are ever going to get fair market value for him, especially since most think he won't ever return to form now that he's gotten paid, but anything is better than the constant headache he's become.

This (like Devin Thomas, and many others) was a move from the Vinny Cerrato era: might as well cut ties and get something out of it and move on instead of dealing with it every day.

I know general manager Bruce Allen has been holding out and hoping that they can get the best deal possible, but at this point maybe we should take a page out of New England's book and have an addition by subtraction.

Would a fourth or fifth-round pick for Haynesworth be worth it since he is such a headache and for the most part the coaching staff refuses to play him?

I don't think the two sides will ever get along and I don't think Haynesworth's value will go up between now and the offseason.  We might as well cut ties and move on now.
