Brazil-Argentina: The day after.

Brazilian Football by SBAug 19, 2008

Brazilians can handle a World Cup defeat as titles abound. They can take an Olympic defeat as they are pretty much used to doing so. Lose to Portugal, Mexico and even Venezuela... no probs.

However, the one thing that Brazilians cannot and will not stomach is to lose to Argentina—and to lose to Argentina 3-0!

The blame game has started rolling in Brazil, even before the match had ended Ricardo Teixeira, president of the CBF (Brazilian Football Confederation) was desperately making calls to Beijing insisting that the team would remain in the Olympic village and play for the bronze. He knew that a defeat like this could have lead to the unthinkable—like Brazil walking away from the tournament.

After getting over the initial shock came the inevitable onslaught of criticism today.

Dunga seems to be the people's and journalist's choice as the main target. Exciting players like Thiago Neves and Hernanes were spared as Dunga was blamed for pushing them into defensive positions.

Anderson was cited as being a player without any apparent function as he neither contributed to the attack nor defended well.

Dunga's display was seen as cowardly. The team played cowardly football waiting for a counter attack. Lesser teams who have no chance of winning can be forgiven for playing this way, waiting for a counter attack or a foul to score a goal and hope for the best.

This is not however the way Brazil should ever play. Brazilian players cannot suppress their game in this way. It's simply uncharacteristic and almost impossible to implement.

Dunga seems to have modelled the team in very much the same manner the 1994 World Cup winning team was set up. The 1994 team was efficient in defence but had another little minute factor in its favour when the odd chance presented itself. A man called Romario.

Sobis, Pato, Jo combined don't give you 10% of Romario.

It would take a football immortal the likes of Romario to pull off victories with a setup like that.

Dunga's plan was therefore totally flawed. What was he thinking?

His days are numbered. Even a big win in Chile for the World Cup eliminations won't save him. It will only prolong his agony. The first match in which he slips up with the main squad will be the end.

The only thing that can undo this agony for the Brazilian people would be a victory in Buenos Aires versus them for the World Cup eliminations... but this is simply not going to happen.

So Dunga is history. The most popular name being thrown around is that of Wanderley Luxemburgo.

Palmeiras' Wanderley had coached the national side before but stepped down shrouded in a mist of investigations of financial misconduct and investigations into the CBF itself.

Like most of these scandals that appear in football from time to time it all ended in pizza and perhaps the time is right for his return.

Dunga let down Brazil and thousands of fans of Brazilian football in Beijing and the world with cowardly football.
