Opening Segment

Teddy Long made the announcement that tonight will feature qualifying matches for Team Smackdown.

Team Raw consists of CM Punk, John Morrison, Sheamus, R-Truth, Santino, and the Team Captain: The Miz.

Not a big surprise that Smackdown would go with the qualifying matches. But wouldn’t it be smarter for the GM to hand pick his team to make sure he has the best team out there?

So Santino fought Zack Ryder to qualify for the team? Yet Sheamus had to beat Daniel Bryan, Tyson Kidd battled Morrison and R-Truth took on Ted Dibiase?

RAW would have been better served to have Dibiase, Daniel Bryan or Kidd on the team instead of Santino.

What’s up with R-Truth’s push?? He is a mid-carder for life.

Why is The Miz the captain? I know that he is awesome, but he did just lose to Daniel Bryan.

Rey Mysterio vs. Cody Rhodes Match

Mysterio defeated Rhodes after a 619 followed by a springboard splash.

This was a great start to the qualifying matches. “Dashing” Cody Rhodes had a few near falls on the Rated G Superstar until ultimately falling victim to the power of the WWE Universe cheers.

What exactly is the West Coast Pop now that Mysterio doesn’t do the springboard into a hurricanrana? Is it his very cool springboard booty splash?

Or maybe it’s his springboard fall-of-the-top rope splash?

Match Rating: 8/10

Big Show & Kaval Backstage Segment

Kaval asked Big Show for a chance to be on the team.

Big Show basically said that Kaval wasn’t in the league of superstars he wants on the team. Kaval challenged Big Show to a five-minute survival match.

Does this really make either of these guys look good?

Paul Bearer Promo Video

Paul Bearer challenged the Undertaker on behalf of Kane in a buried-alive match.

This Paul Bearer promo reminded me of local attorney commercials, where they are obviously reading from a large card off camera.

Promo Rating: 6/10

Jack Swagger vs. MVP Match

Swagger defeated MVP by ankle lock.

Swagger really needs to drop the Eagle mascot. Glad to see Swagger named to the Smackdown team.

I fear that MVP is without a program to boast his character. The writers have him winning matches against Swagger right after his World title run and competing for the Intercontinental championship.

Then he doesn’t even make it on the team.

Match Rating: 7/10

Alberto Del Rio vs. Chris Masters Match

Del Rio won via flying arm breaker on Chris Masters.

Chris Masters looked really good against the World Champion Kane a few weeks back. Big Show put over Masters during his entire commentary.

Del Rio should stop crossing his feet when executing the cross arm breaker. It’s a basic Brazilian jiu-jitsu arm bar where crossing the feet allows for an easy escape for your opponent.

Can Del Rio get along with Rey Mysterio on Team Smackdown?

Match Rating: 8/10

Edge vs. (IC) Dolph Ziggler Match

Edge defeated Ziggler after hitting the spear.

Both of these superstars should be on the team. It appears, however, that they are booking both teams to consist of wrestlers who are not currently holding a championship.

Ziggler’s Zig Zag on Edge into the steel steps looked painful.

Edge’s spear looked more like a spine buster, but it looked effective regardless.

I loved that Michael Cole pointed out that Big Show had an issue with Vicki Guerrero.

I would have to admit that I like the baby face Edge. However, didn’t he just admit to everyone that he doesn’t care about the fans during his face off with Christian about six months ago after his feud with Jericho ended?

Match Rating: 8/10

Big Show vs. Kaval 5 Minute Challenge

Kaval basically got thrown around until the last minute of the match.

Kaval survived the five minutes, and thus earned a spot on the team.

Match Rating: 5/10

Tyler Rex vs. Kaval Match

Tyler Rex interrupted Kaval’s celebration and said that he deserved to be on the team.

Kaval said that he “didn’t need a babysitter,” and that if Rex wanted to take his spot, he could try.

Kaval attempted the Warriors Way stomp, but it resulted in a vicious clothesline. Rex followed it by a Death Valley Driver/DDT variation for a spot on the blue team.

Tyler Rex’s first run in the WWE was lackluster. He dropped the surfer dude gimmick and adopted the mean beard and black tights.

It appears that the facial fury, along with the Steve Austin tights, has given him an unexpected push.

Has Kaval won a match since winning NXT? Why are they trying to bury him?

There are talks about him turning heel to feud with Rey Mysterio. He is going to need some wins before that program starts to look like a legitimate threat to Mysterio.

The match was quick, but Rex’s ring work looked much improved.

Match Rating: 7/10

Kofi Kingston vs. Drew McIntyre Match

Kingston won the match with the Trouble in Paradise for a spot on the team.

Looks like the tag-team champions weren’t lucky tonight, as they both lost their shots on the team.

Match Rating: 7/10

Kane & Undertaker Segment

Kane delivered a passionate promo.

Production appeared to have dropped the dramatic background music for this one.

Undertaker made his way to the ring and stood face-to-face with Kane. Kane took a few steps back and appeared hesitant when Taker engaged him.

Kane retreated to the stage, where Taker sent a bolt of lighting his way.

This feud is going to go through every gimmick match possible before ending. No matter who wins this buried-alive match, there will be a casket match at Survivor Series.

Segment Rating: 7/10

Final Thoughts

Team Smackdown looks much stronger from top to bottom than Team Raw.

Tyler Rex’s membership on the team is intriguing enough that I don’t care that Ziggler isn’t on the team.

Team Smackdown:                               Team Raw:

Capt. Big Show                                    Capt. The Miz

Kofi Kingston                                       CM Punk

Rey Mysterio                                        Sheamus

Alberto Del Rio                                    John Morrison

Edge                                                    R-Truth

Jack Swagger                                       Santino

Tyler Rex                                             ?

Overall Rating: 8/10
