EPL: Week One Highlights

R LAug 18, 2008

The first week of the English Premier League is over, and as usual, there were surprises aplenty. Some fans may be disappointed with their team's performance, while others were left extremely happy. Here's a recap of the first week of EPL football in 2007-2008.

Nasri wastes no time.

It took Arsenal's newcomer, Samir Nasri, all of four minutes to strike his first goal in the EPL against West Brom. Arsenal had plenty of opportunities to extend their lead, but failed to pull the trigger after some nifty passing. Still, the goal was enough to give Arsenal the win, and Nasri a debut to remember.

Middlesbrough hang on against Tottenham.

After already having a 32nd-minute goal disallowed, David Wheater struck again in the 71st minute but this time, the goal stood. Hossam Mido would put Middlesbrough free and clear in the 86th minute, rendering Robert Huth's late own-goal irrelevant. Dimitar Berbatov didn't come on until the 65th minute, giving fans even more reason to believe he's on his way out of Tottenham.

Elmander gets off to a Swede start.

Bolton's record signing Johan Elmander scored the third goal for the Wanderers in a 3-0 victory. Bolton played some strong football, and gave Stoke City a harsh taste of life in the Premier League.

Ashton gets West Ham up-and-running.

Dean Ashton scored twice in the opening 10 minutes to give West Ham a two-one victory. Amr Zaki responded in the 47th minute for Wigan, but that's as close as they would get.

Everton get burned.

Blackburn started their EPL season with a dramatic victory. Down 2-1, they came back with two goals (including one in the 93rd minute) to stun Everton at Goodison Park.

Torres does it again.

For almost 90 minutes, Liverpool looked like they were going get off to a rough start in the new season. Sunderland looked better in the first half, but the Reds came to life in the second. Fernando Torres didn't get many opportunities, but when he got the ball at the edge of the box in the 83rd minute, he fired a beautiful low-shot inside the left post. One chance, one goal. That's Fernando Torres in a nutshell.

A Hull of a debut.

Hull City scored two goals to erase a one-nil deficit, giving them a win in their EPL debut. Fulham took an eighth minute lead with a Seol Ki-Hyeon header, before Geovanni equalized after a stunning shot. In the 81st minute, Craig Fagan stole the ball from Paul Konchesky and set up Caleb Folan for an easy tap-in, that sent the KC Stadium into raptures.

Portsmouth sing the Blues.

Luiz Felipe Scolari started his reign as Chelsea coach with a convincing four-nil win. Joe Cole, Nicolas Anelka, Frank Lampard, and Deco each struck for Chelsea. The rest of the Premier League should take notice from this performance.

Manchester look hardly united.

Manchester United once again began their campaign with a shaky performance. A one-one draw with Newcastle has to make you wonder if Sir Alex Ferguson will look for a new striker. Cristiano Ronaldo, Carlos Tevez, and Nani were all absent from this game—as Obafemi Martins and Darren Fletcher scored the goals.

Agbonlahor gets hat trick.

Gabriel Agbonlahor will be the leading scorer in the EPL for at least one week, after he scored three times in less than 20 minutes to give Aston Villa a comfortable 4-2 win over Manchester City.

That's it for week one of the Premier League. How did your team do? What was your favourite moment? Were you impressed or disappointed?
