Michael Phelps and Usain Bolt: Two Wonder Athletes Who Left Me Speechless
I must admit, I wasn't looking forward to the Olympics that much. I had it in my head that it was going to be boring, mainly because of the amount of events that I just find worse than watching paint dry.
But how wrong have I been? Right from the unbelievable opening ceremony, the games have provided me with much entertainment. OK, so maybe I still don't find the likes of Sailing and Horse Riding exactly thrilling to watch, but it has been a lot better than I expected.
Great Britain has been fantastic so far, with this weekend being one of our best in Olympics' history in terms of medals won. We are now third in the medals table, ahead of Germany and Australia, which is always nice for the Great British public.
But the athletes that have impressed me most have not been from the British camp, although the likes Bradley Wiggins, Rebecca Adlington, and Rebecca Romero have all done wonderfully.
No, the athletes I have been impressed with most are probably the same athletes that everyone has been impressed with most. The fastest man in water and the fastest man out of it.
Both Michael Phelps and Usain Bolt have been so dominant in their respective sports that we actually expected Phelps to get eight golds, and Bolt to comfortably win the 100m gold.
Their dominance is like nothing we have ever seen before.
With the exception of the 100m Butterfly swim, no one could hold a candle to Phelps. He didn't slip up once; he consistently went out there and performed sublimely. And, on seven of the eight occasions, better than anyone in human history had performed in that race before.
Of course, his fellow teammates deserve some of the plaudits for helping him to his phenomenal record-breaking haul, but there is no doubting who the main star is. Eight gold medals in one Olympics. That is just unbelievable.
Until Phelps came along, people said Mark Spitz's record may never be broken. Now it has and Phelps, at just 23, has established himself well among the higher tier of the great Olympians.
He has 14 gold medals to his name already. Another Olympics like this one, which is entirely possible considering his dominance over the sport, and it would bring his tally up to 22 golds, when the old record was just nine.
Usain Bolt may not have won as many medals, but his performance was equally as impressive. Watching the final of the 100m, I was literally speechless. He just blew everyone else away, including Asafa Powell, who is not exactly a slow man!
He ran 80 metres, and then started celebrating and almost jogged the rest! And he still broke the world record! It was truly an awesome spectacle to watch. The greatest 100m sprint of all time. He became the fastest man in human history, seemingly without trying. Just imagine what he could do if he actually sprinted all the way.
So thank you Bolt and Phelps (and of course the rest) for creating historical sporting moments, for which the Beijing Olympics will always be remembered.
