Is Nick Saban Really the Most Powerful Coach in Sports?

Jared CornuttAug 17, 2008

Nick Saban was on the cover of Forbes Magazine where he was proclaimed to be the most powerful coach in sports. There has been much discussion about Forbes decision on Alabama around the college football world.

Many disagree, like Kevin Scarbinsky of the Birmingham News, an Auburn fan who rarely says anything good about the University of Alabama. But I will tell you today why Nick Saban IS the most powerful coach in sports.

"Most powerful coach" isn't about how many wins you have. It's not about how many championships you have won or how many players you have sent pro (even though a certain writer disagrees).

It's not even about the impact you make on a player's life that makes you a powerful coach. What makes you a powerful coach is...well, it's pretty simple...power.

Nick Saban has as much power at Alabama as the President of the United States or more. Saban has been given complete control over the football program, which needed a strong leader. Not to mention, he has an eight-year, $32 million contract.

You see, Saban is the most powerful coach in sports because he has more power than any coach around. He is bringing in $4 million a year and is worshipped by Alabama fans everywhere.

Saban is the most powerful coach because he convinced the top high school players in the country to come to a school that finished 7-6 last year. Someone who has no power cannot do that. Nick Saban has power, he has money, and now he has some talent.

Soon enough, you will be seeing in magazines that Nick Saban is the coach of one of the most powerful teams in football. With the No. 1 recruiting class in the country and another good one coming, in Saban looks to be changing things.

So good luck, Nick Saban into making Alabama SEC contenders again.
