Orioles Throttle Tigers, Report Card

Bleacher Report Senior Writer IAugust 16, 2008

The Baltimore Orioles crushed the Detroit Tigers, 11-2 at Comerica Park. The O's put the Tigers on the wrong side of the rally. The O's scored four in the first three and six in the top of the 9th.

Melvin Mora had a fantastic game, going 3-4 with a homer and four runs batted in. He was a double short of the cycle.

The O's scored in the top of the first. With two out and none aboard, Mora tripled and scored on a two out seeing eye single by Aubrey Huff. The O's scored two more when Brian Roberts singled, scoring Luke Scott. The throw by Tiger outfielder Magglio Ordonez was wide and allowed Juan Castro to score as well. The O's scored again the next inning when Mora did another good thing, homering to left off Nate Robertson.

The Tigers scored both of their runs the next inning. Placido Polanco hit a two run homer, scoring Curtis Granderson as well. It knocked Chris Waters out of the game after just four innings. He only allowed two runs, but eight hits.

The O's would win the game. Melvin Mora drove in a run in the 6th and Luis Montanez, Juan Castro, Melvin Mora and Aubrey Huff drove in runs in the 9th off Todd Jones and Francis Beltran. Oddly, all the runs were unearned.

2B Brian Roberts: B+. Was 2-4 with a pair of singles and a run scored. Had a few putouts at second. Also walked once.

RF Nick Markakis: C. Was 0-4 with two walks and a run scored.  He did strike out twice and had some putouts in right.

3B Melvin Mora: A+. Went 3-of-4 with a homer (18) and drove in four runs. Reached base four of the five teams he made a trip, walking once as well. Made eight putouts at third. Double short of cycle.

DH Aubrey Huff: B+. Was 3-of-6 with a pair of RBI. Raised his batting average to .303 and now has 82 RBI, three behind Mora's total of 85.

C Ramon Hernandez: C-: Was 1-5 with a double, but struck out once and left a couple men on base. Didn't play good catcher defensively, but he didn't need to.

1B Kevin Millar: B: Was 2-for-5. Both hits were doubles and he scored a run. Played solid first base and contributed in an 11-2 thrashing.

LF Luke Scott: A: Reached base all four times he stepped to the plate. Was 1-1 with a double. Also walked three times and scored a run.

CF Luis Montanez: D: Was 0-5 with three punch outs, leaving six men on base. He did record an RBI on a groundout. Played nondescript defense in his first ever start in center.

SS Juan Castro: B: Was 2-4 with his first two doubles and an RBI. Also started a 6-4-3 double play. He made an error, but it didn't matter at all.

SP Chris Waters: C: Ran deep in counts, but only allowed two runs in four and two thirds. Didn't get a win, but would've if Trembley would've kept him in for the last batter. Pitched four shutout until the fifth, where he allowed a 2-run shot to Polanco.

RP Lance Cormier: A-: Pitched excellent for two and a thirds through the seventh. He only allowed one baserunner. Lance actually got the win (2-3).

RP Jim Johnson: B-: Allowed two hits, but no runs and held the Tigers to no runs where at the time, the game was a save situation.

RP George Sherrill: B: Pitched the ninth, didn't need to do much. Walked a man, struck out a man, and finished a win.
