Number Three
Edgar Martinez, 3B/DH 1987-2004
- B/R Ticket Guide
Edgar Martinez to a lot of Seattle Mariner fans is not just a great baseball player, he's a hero. He's the guy that saved baseball in Seattle, he's the guy that built Safeco Field, he's the man that hit the "double". Perhaps the most beloved Mariner of all-time, he started, played, and ended his eighteen year career as a Seattle Mariner.
From his humble start at 3rd base into his evolving into the greatest designated hitter of all-time, we were lucky to witness this future Hall of Famer.
There are too many stand out seasons to analyze. Instead let's take a look at his achievements in his entire career.
- Five silver sluggers
- Seven all-star apperances (Four as a starter)
- 18 seasons as a Mariner
- .571 batting average against the Yankees in the 1995 ALDS
- Led the American League twice in batting average, 1992: .345, 1993: .356
- Led the American League in On-Base % three times: 1995: .479, 1998: .429, 1999: .447
Words can't express the love Seattle has for this guy. Seriously. What's not to like about Edgar? He never had trouble in the clubhouse, was always a great contributor in the lineup, never complained, and came to play everyday. Didn't you love it when he rounded third base from second on a hit to score, I'd always have a heart attack seeing him run his butt off.
Does Edgar deserve the number three spot? Is he the greatest Mariner of all-time?

I don't know how Martinez got ahead of A-Rod. I bet number 2 is Ichiro and number 1 is Ken Griffey JR. At least A-Rod played defense. The one knock and it was a huge knock on Edgar Martinez is that he could never stay healthy when he was playing in the field. That is why he was a DH. Sure, he was a scary hitter for opposing pitchers, but I believe if you're going for a top 10 of anything the player has to be able to play offense and defense.

We're shooting for best "Mariners" of all-time, Edgar played his entire career in Seattle as opposed to A-Rod who didn't

I think he's deserving for sure...The guy was a hitting machine, his nickname should be Mr.Mariner for gods sake. There's little debate as to who no. 2 and no. 1 are...Ichiro and then Griffey Jr. #1. Good column Kevin
