They are calling it the biggest blockbuster of the summer. Celebrating 20 years, Summerslam 2008 prepares to get underway August 17 from the Conseco FieldHouse in Indianapolis.
There are some very interesting match-ups to analyze. So, I'll provide my match-to-match analysis.
Mark Henry vs. Matt Hardy
A match that doesn't personally grab my attention, but it will pit the power of Henry against the speed and agility of Hardy. When Hardy was drafted to ECW, I knew it would be only a matter of time before he got a title shot due to the lack of star power on ECW.
WWE has seemed to give Henry multiple pushes over the years, and now he is getting another shot as the "World's Strongest Champion". I don't particularly see this being a great match-up, but I do predicate this being a feud for a couple of months.
With that being said I give the edge to Mark Henry.
Winner: Mark Henry
Winner Take All Tag Team Match (Intercontinental and Women's Championship)
Kofi Kingston and Mickie James vs. Santino Marella and Beth Phoenix
An "Adamale Original", this is actually a pretty interesting "gimmick match". I think that Santino Marella is hilarious and has found a niche with his comedy in the WWE. Kofi Kingston is an up and coming wrestler who is pretty established. I'm glad they moved him to RAW where more people can observe what he can do.
Clearly Mickie James and Beth Phoenix are two of the best Diva Wrestlers in all of the WWE. In effect, I always like it when they meet. At the Summerslam, we could definitely see the titles change hands.
It would be really humorous if somehow Santino and Beth fought over who would take which belt, with Santino becoming the Women's Champion!
Winner: Santino and The Glamazon
Shawn Michaels Announcement
The feud between Shawn Michaels and Chris Jericho has really undertaken a high gear. They have let it play out over the last few months, while Jericho's character is changing. It's clear to me that Shawn Michaels is not going to retire and we'll see some type of run-in from Jericho and his sidekick Lance Cade.
I would have liked to see a match between the two at the pay-per-view, however, we'll get a likely confrontation instead.
MVP vs. Jeff Hardy
I think this match could still the show. I really like both guys and with the lack of main event heels on Smackdown, a MVP/HHH feud could be inevitable down the road. It's interesting how the WWE writers got really personal for this feud using some of Jeff Hardy's real life problems to further push this. I see Jeff Hardy possibly main eventing WrestleMania 25 and I predict his huge push will continue.
Winner: Jeff Hardy
World Heavyweight Championship
CM Punk vs. JBL
Along with the Cena/Batista match, this is the toughest match to predict for me.CM Punk is out to prove he is not a "transitional champion" and JBL wants to put the "Wrestling God" back on top.
I don't understand why the WWE had them fight on RAW the Monday after The Great American Bash, if the plan was to make this match for SummerSlam.CM Punk won that match clean, but maybe the WWE is hoping fans won't remember it.
With the winner of the Cena/Batista match likely next in line for a title shot, I'm going to give the edge to JBL. I'm not too confident regarding this prediction, though.
Winner: And New World Heavyweight Champion JBL
HHH vs. The Great Khali
They've been trying to build this one up, but I think everyone knows that Khali has no shot to win the title. I'm really a big fan of HHH but not of this match. I understand why HHH was moved to Smackdown, however, outside of Edge, what main event quality heels is there for him to fight?
I would be totally shocked if HHH loses, but don't expect it to happen.
Hell In A Cell
Edge vs. The Undertaker
This is a match months in the making. For the WWE fans who've been around for a while, we know that Taker usually gets some time off after Wrestlemania and returns for a big match at Summerslam.
Edge is the No.1 heel in all of the WWE, in my opinion. He urges the crowd not to admire him. Destroying on "The Family" and Mick Foley were all good ways to give the "edge" he needs to go into "Hell In A Cell".
With that said, the Undertaker has not lost in a Hell in A Cell match and I give him the...edge in this one.
Winner: The Undertaker
John Cena vs. Batista
Along with the Edge/Taker match, Cena/Batista are the two biggest matches on the card. This is really a Wrestlemania caliber match and is a tough one to call. Two popular superstars who have done it all going one-on-one.
Cena's style is "ground and pound" while Batista is pure power. Cena's strength is sometimes underrated and he is just as strong as Batista.
I've been thinking about who's going to win this match and I've based my decision on one thing: Batista fought for the belt at The Great American Bash. Consequently, that means, now, it's Cena's turn to get a title shot.
Winner: John Cena
