WWE Summerslam Preview: The Genesis...and The Armageddon

Ron JohnsonAug 15, 2008

Even though we've seen anarchy return on RAW, and power struggles arrive on ECW, we've only hit the tip of the iceberg that will come crashing onto the WWE this Sunday. Without knowing what tonight's SmackDown! will hold, we can know for sure that The Biggest Blockbuster of the Summer is only two days away.

With that, here's the rundown of this Sunday's Summerslam!

Sports Stars to be on Wheel of Fortune 🤩

Ever since losing the Women's Championship, Beth Phoenix has been a woman possessed. Now she may have found an unlikely ally in the form of the Boisterous Italian Santino Marella. Now thanks to the new RAW General Manager, the odd couple of Glamarella will have a chance to lay claim to a two for one special when they face Mickie James and Kofi Kingston.

James defeated Phoenix prior to Backlash to regain the Women's Championship, and she has staved off challenge after challenge since winning it. As for Kofi, he finished off his rivalry with Shelton Benjamin on ECW, got drafted to RAW, then defeated Chris Jericho at Night of Champions to win his first championship in his WWE career. Now both of them have to fend off another set of challengers who just make you want to regurgitate last night's dinner at the very sight of them.

Hopefully when this match is over, Santino will finally shave that god awful unibrow.

MVP vs. Jeff Hardy

One lost the United States Championship because of his big mouth. The other almost lost his dream because of his reckless lifestyle. Both will lock up at Summerslam to finish off a rivalry that has been brewing for months.

For those who don't remember, Jeff Hardy has only faced MVP once. In that match, it was Hardy's high flying style that sealed the victory over the Franchise Playa. Since losing the US Title to Jeff's brother Matt, Porter has been a man possessed on reclaiming the glory days of yesteryear. Now he's set his sights on the Rainbow Warrior.

This rivalry took a turn for the worst when Porter made it personal. On a recent VIP Lounge, Porter questioned Hardy's reckless actions in regards to the personal demons and tragedies that he overcame while on suspension. After that, there has been a different side of Jeff Hardy seen by everyone. At Summerslam, the two SmackDown! goliaths will end this feud once and for all...unless MVP decides to drop by the next Hardy Family Reunion. But if Lita won't even drop in, what are the odds of this Miscriant from Miami dropping through?

Matt Hardy vs. Mark Henry for the ECW Championship

While the biggest story on ECW will be the departure of one worthless superstar (Colin Delaney) and the resurgence of several (Atlas Ortiz & Evan Bourne), the biggest story this Sunday will be the World's Strongest Man battling arguably the World's Strongest Heart when Mark Henry faces Matt Hardy for ECW supremacy.

Since winning the ECW Championship, Mark Henry has been virtually unstoppable in his quest to be the best champion of the three brands. But he may have found his match in the form of a man who has made it clear that he will not die. Matt Hardy earned his spot at Summerslam by surviving three of WWE's toughest superstars in a Fatal Four Way for the right to face Henry for the ECW Championship at Summerslam.

But with every victory comes a consequence. Has Henry finally met his match in the spirit of V1? Or will Hardy fall like the others who have tried to dethrone the Silverback from the top of the ECW Mountain?

Batista vs. John Cena for the 1st Time Ever (Six Years in the Making)

For six years, we have witnessed dominance like no other between two of the biggest giants in sports entertainment. While Triple H was grooming The Animal for superstardom, John Cena was doing his own version of thugging and bugging on SmackDown! In the process, their paths crossed several times leading up to the biggest Wrestlemania of their careers.

At Wrestlemania 21, Batista defeated Triple H in a brutal battle for the World Heavyweight Championship while John Cena defeated JBL to become WWE Champion. A month after destroying their rivals one last time, the two men switched places, and the match that many thought they would see at the Royal Rumble never happened...

...that is until now.

In his first official act as RAW GM, Mike Adamle decided to give everyone the answer to the million dollar question: Who is the biggest star in WWE today? This Sunday, the two men who for at least one breath were Tag Team Champions will square off in the biggest match of the night (so far). It's clear that both men want to be Champion once again, and it's also clear that the winner will face the World Heavyweight Champion at a later time.

No matter the outcome, this is a Five Star Caliber match, and we all get to see it go down this Sunday.

CM Punk vs. JBL for the World Heavyweight Championship

Last month, CM Punk capitalized on the assault on Edge from Batista. He pulled a trick out of Edge's own playbook and cashed in the MitB briefcase to become the World Heavyweight Champion. Since then, he has managed to survive Kane, Snitsky, Batista and his opponent this Sunday, JBL.

But this match is more personal than ever thanks to Layfield's antics. For over a month, JBL has made it clear that Punk is nothing more than a transitional champion, and that he is the only one who deserves to be champion on RAW. Now he has one more shot to prove if he really does deserve to wear the gold instead of Punk.

For Punk, he is itching to prove that he is a fighting champion and that he earned the championship over Edge. No matter the outcome, no one can say that Punk didn't fight for his gold. And everyone can say that JBL is nothing more than an overweight gasbag who just needs to know his role and shut his mouth. But until then, enjoy watching him get his @$$ handed to him on a Straight Edge, Jack Daniels flavored platter.

Triple H vs. The Great Khali for the WWE Championship

He is the 12x World Champion. He is the Cerebral Assassin. He is the King of Kings. But when it's all said and done, he is still The Game. Since outlasting JBL, John Cena and Randy Orton to reclaim the WWE Championship, Triple H has done everything in his power to continue his reign as champion. But this Sunday, he faces his toughest challenge to date.

No one has been able to stop the Punjabi Giant in his road of destruction. Several have tried, and they've all failed...except for a few. But Triple H has faced giants of all shapes and sizes, but he's never faced a nightmare like The Great Khali. Now at Summerslam, the Biggest Blockbuster of the Summer will have two of its Biggest Blockbuster acts collide for the WWE Championship.

With his reign as champion in jeopardy, can The Game continue his new found dominance over the SmackDown! Kingdom? Or will the Punjabi Nightmare hoist up his second World Championship?

Edge vs. The Undertaker (Hell In The Cell)

At One Night Stand, Edge did the impossible and banished the Phenom from the WWE in a TLC Match. After that night, everything changed for The Rated R Superstar. In other words, banishing The Undertaker was the single worst thing he ever did in his career.

It started after Night of Champions when an irate Batista decimated an intruding World Champion. Following the assault, CM Punk cashed in the briefcase, defeated Edge and won the World Heavyweight Championship. After several close calls, Edge finally married SmackDown! GM Vickie Guerrero, but was caught cheating with Vickie's wedding planner Alicia Fox.

This should bring us to present day where Vickie dropped the bombshell that she had reinstated The Undertaker and put him in a Hell in a Cell match at Summerslam...against her husband, Edge! Following the announcement, Edge turned back into the Edge of old and took out Mick Foley, Bam Neely, Hawkins and Ryder and Chavo. In response, he made it clear that if he's going to hell, he's taking The Undertaker and all of La Familia with him.

But the biggest story will be if we'll see any signs of The Phenom before Summerslam. With SmackDown! on the horizon, what will be the next move of Edge and the first move of The Undertaker? Will the Deadman get revenge on the Ultimate Opportunist? Or will The Rated R Superstar find a way to stave off a Last Ride trip straight to Hell?

Will this be the Genesis or the Armageddon of Shawn Michaels?

At the Great American Bash, Shawn Michaels suffered a devastating eye injury that may have put him on the sidelines permanently. After tearing his retina at the merciless hands of Chris Jericho, Shawn has made it clear that this time, he will listen to the doctor's advice. Today, he is slated to see his doctors one last time, and he will have his decision this Sunday at Summerslam.

No matter the outcome, the Heartbreak Kid has guaranteed that he will be in Indianapolis with a decision about his future. He will either give us a date of return to action or he will announce his official retirement at Summerslam. No one is more distraught over the possibility of his retirement than the die hard fans who have watched him earn his moniker as the Showstopper.
