3 Things I Learned From Last Week

1.  Alabama displayed the heart of a champion.  They didn’t play to the level of their competition.  They just plain played horrendous in the 1st half.  But they found the guts to suck it up and win.  Point blank, when the moment mattered the most, Alabama rose to the occasion, and Arkansas choked.  I’ve said to many people, that it will click for the Alabama defense, and when it does, Alabama will be nearly unstoppable.  Did it click for Alabama?  Stay tuned.

2.  Stanford is for real.  They may not be great in specific areas, but they are very good in all areas.  They just look so technically sound in all the fundamentals.  All the credit needs to go to Jim Harbaugh.  He may be controversial, and a touch of arrogance, but no mistake, he is a great coach.  Stanford needs to lock him up ASAP, before a better job arises.

3.  The Pac-10 is right now, the second best conference in the nation.  Once USC got hammered, all the talent in California that USC gobbled up and hoarded from the conference, is now getting dispersed to UCLA, Stanford, Arizona, etc.  Thus USC’s folly is the Pac-10’s benefit.  You will see now great competition amongst the whole conference and better games.  For example, when USC was in its prime, would the Stanford/Oregon game be at the level they are right now?

3 Games of the Week

Biggest Game - #7 Florida at #1 Alabama - Saturday, October 2 - 8:00 pm EST - CBS

This latest installment of this rivalry, can be compared to the Rocky series.  Rocky being played by Alabama.  Rocky I, Balboa gave Apollo Creed a helluva fight but lost to the champ.  2008, Alabama had favored Florida on the ropes but Florida pulled from within and beat Alabama.  Rocky II, Balboa and Creed rematched, this time Rocky came out on top.  2009, Alabama comes in and dominates Florida to win the SEC title.  Now hopefully for Alabama fans, this doesn’t end up like Rocky III.  Balboa got high on the hog (no pun intended) and lost the title at the beginning of the movie.  I don’t think this will happen to Alabama.  This is purely an emotion game, both teams are equal on talent and coaching.  Because it will be at night, in primetime, in Tuscaloosa, I give Alabama the edge.  I see Alabama jumping out to a 10-0 lead in the first, Florida surging, but Alabama putting it away late 3rd early 4th quarter.

Intriguing Game - #9 Stanford at #4 Oregon - Saturday, October 2 - 8:00 pm EST - ABC

The best way to describe this game is flash vs. technique.  Oregon’s offense has been putting up numbers more ridiculous than any college guy can do on XBOX.  Meanwhile, Stanford has been out executing everyone in their path (i.e. Notre Dame).  In this type of setting I know that Stanford is on the road, and Oregon has a great offense, but their defense was shaky last week.  Added to that, I really like Andrew Luck and Stanford as a whole, so I’m going to go with Stanford to pull off a big win on the road.

Upset Alert - Washington at #18 USC - Saturday, October 2 - 8:00 pm EST - ESPN2

Last year Washington killed USC’s championship hopes early.  Now USC is playing for nothing, meanwhile Jake Locker and company are desperately looking for a win.  There really shouldn’t be a reason USC loses this game.  They are far better than Washington, but when you are on NCAA probation, these are the types of games you can lose.  Call it a wild hunch but I’m going with it, thus USC is on upset alert.
