A Better Team USA

Kevin CacabelosAug 12, 2008
Is this year's "Redeem Team" really the best the United States can put on the floor? Sparked by a recent post on Dime, I'm going to attempt to make a NBA team made of Americans that can beat LeBron and company..
Starting Lineup:
Tim Duncan/C- Mainly here for defense, will be able to provide a match for Dwight Howard

New NBA Mock Draft 📝

Kevin Garnett/PF- A supplement to Duncan's defense and the main rebounder on the team
Tracy McGrady/SF- Not as good as Kobe or LeBron, but a constant scoring threat that will be the 1st or 2nd scoring option
Allen Iverson/SG- Along with McGrady, the scoring will come from Iverson, he'll be able to stay in most of the game, picking up the slack when T-Mac is out
Chauncey Billups/PG- An experienced guard that will outsmart Team USA players' Chris Paul and Deron Williams. Superior on the defensive end as well.
Bench:
Al Jefferson/PF- Adequate backup for Garnett or Duncan, will fill in nicely when either is fatigued.
Jason Kapono/SF-Three-point specialist, will help against the zone defenses.
Rashard Lewis/SF- See above.
Rip Hamilton/SG- Another zone killer, the team can utilize screens from the forwards and centers.
Brandon Roy/G- Perhaps the most versatile player on the team, can fill in for both guard positions and play on or off the ball.
Ronnie Brewer/G- Might be a strange pick, but will be the defensive specialist you need in international play.
Baron Davis/PG- The Red Bull Role.  Provides high energy during slow games or lazy play.
I avoided trying to just grabbing each all-star available, or the "best" players left over from Team USA. Instead, I tried to create a team that would not only be able to beat the current Team USA, but thrive in international play. This means that free throw shooting, three point shooting, and solid defense were emphasis when putting the team together.
Would this team be able to matchup against the current Team USA Olympic roster?
I decided to do it the right way, going to WhatIfSports.com, a fairly accurate way of simulating games that would never happen. I used the stats from the last season, put the current starting rosters for both and pitted them against each other. I decided to play a 5 game series seeing who could win best out of five, here's how it turned out:
Key: (Team USA 1= Olympic Team, Team USA 2= My Team)
Game One
Team USA2--104 (Player of the Game- Tracy McGrady 21pts, 7asts, 6rebs)
Team USA1--87

Game Two
Team USA2--119 (Player of the Game- Tim Duncan 24pts, 16rebs, 7asts)
Team USA1--115
Game Three
Team USA1-104 (Player of the Game- LeBron James 27pts, 8rebs, 6asts)
Team USA2-81
Game Four
Team USA2-94 (Player of the Game- Tim Duncan 17pts, 16rebs)
Team USA1-78
Game Five
Team USA1-107 (Player of the Game- LeBron James 28pts, 14rebs, 5asts)
TEAM USA2-91
Surprisingly, the team I constructed took three out of five games against the "Redeem Team". The defensive emphasis I believe was the main thing that separated the teams. I don't think Dwight Howard and Chris Bosh could matchup against Duncan and Garnett.

What do you think? Can you come up with a team that could beat Team USA like mine? Could I make more improvements to the "superior Team USA"?
