Shane Mosley Against the Ropes with Sergio Mora

Bill CodySep 18, 2010

Tonight thousands of Los Angeles boxing fans will stream into Staple Pavilion to see if Shane Mosley has anything left in the tank. I'm guessing he doesn't, but it still might be an interesting fight.

His opponent Sergio Mora is one of the more interesting stories in boxing in my opinion. Best known as the first season winner of the low rated Reality Show The Contender, the Latin Snake has only two blemishes on his record.

A draw against lightly regarded Elvin Ayala and a thumping by the late great Vernon Forrest two years ago. That fight, however, took place after Mora stunned the Forrest and the boxing world by beating Forrest earlier that same year.

The problem with Mora is that most boxing people never considered him to be a big time contender and he doesn't fight that much. His inactivity lending credence to the strong belief among boxing people that he's a bigger cherry picker than Floyd Mayweather.

For that reason, it be poetic if Mora was the one to make Mayweather's win last May against Sugar Shane look quite small in retrospect. And I think that's exactly what Mora is going to do.

First of all, this fight is at junior middleweight but Mora came in heavy. He'll have to give up part of his purse but now they'll basically be fighting in Mora's comfort zone in what will basically be a Middleweight encounter.

Then there is Mora's size and reach advantage.

With the exception of Antonio Margarito, Mosley has always struggled with taller, lankier fighters. Forrest and Winky Wright both beat Shane easily on two different occasions. I think Mosley will struggle again tonight.

Finally, Mora has good hand speed which negates the one advantage Mosley has had when he fights bigger fighters.

I think this will be the end of the line for Shane. It's been a good run but let's face it. If he loses tonight it will mean he hasn't beaten a top fighter other than Margarito since he beat Oscar in 2002. A fight in which he was juiced on steroids and amped up through blood doping.

As for Mora. If he wins tonight I'm sure he'll call out both Pacquiao and Mayweather. I don't think he'll get Pacquiao who really only wants Floyd. But a PBF bout might not be such a pipe dream.

That is, if Money can stay out of jail.
