"Team India" The Test Match Team That Should Be

Ankit MunjalCorrespondent IAugust 11, 2008

After yesterdays loss to Sri Lanka, I think there might be a few players on the Indian team biting their nails wondering if they will get another chance to show their value. Among these are names that we have been familiar with over the past decade, and I think the time is now right for India to drop some of these guys and move on. We can't have wholesale changes and have an entirely new team so they need to drop some of the seniors in the side and ease the younger ones in over a period of time. The players I believe should be the first to go are well Sourav Ganguly and Anil Kumble.

With Ganguly it's just that fact that lately he doesn't look comfortable at the crease, he doesn't fill my heart with confidence that yes he will stay at the crease and grind out the runs required in a test match that a certain Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar do despite being out of form. So in his place we could bring in Yuvraj singh, Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma whoever deserves it more.

In my opinion making Kumble the captain of the team was a big big mistake, I know Dhoni wasn't ready but Sachin had put his hand up and should have been the one to take the reigns of the team. Chosing Kumble meant his name would be the first on the team sheet. As of now he doesn't command a spot in the first eleven willy nilly. Specially if we are overseas in England, Australia where some games we can only go in with one spinner, there dropping Harbhajan over Kumble doesnt make sense at all. Kumble might still be a force on dusty, crumbling Indian wickets such as the one at "Feroz Shah Kotla" but honestly right now he's India's second best spinner if that. We have able replacements in the form of young Piyush Chawla and Ohja, and unless given a chance to stamp their authority and claim a spot on the team for themselves how are we going to unearth our next spin sensation.

So here's my team no radical changes just a few tweaks:

1. Virender Sehwag

2. Gautam Gambhir

3. Rahul Dravid

4. Sachin Tendulkar

5. VVS Laxman

6. Yuvraj/Rohit Sharma/Suresh Raina

7. MS Dhoni

8. Piyush Chawla/Irfan Pathan: Depending on the wicket/weather conditions

9. Harbhajan Singh

10. Zaheer Khan

11. Ishant Sharma

So there you have it my team for India's next test series. As you can see the only changes there are, Kumble, Ganguly and the wicketkeepers. Patel and Karthik are definitely not in the same league as Dhoni and I think its about time he was made the captain of the Test Team too. Over the next 2-4 years we can then drop Dravid, Tendulkar, Laxman but we must start now. India has a brilliant team and we the fans deserve better than just being the economic powerhouse of the cricketing world, boy that's another topic for another day though.

I am sure those of you who have read this article agree with me, if not I would love to know your thoughts on the matter.
