Michael Carrick Finds New Job

Jeff HarbertAug 8, 2008

Manchester United’s Michael Carrick has been busying himself over the summer with a new job. But don’t worry Manchester United and England fans, he’s still going to play football.

While most football players spend their summers relaxing on the beach after a grueling season, or taking it easy in their homeland, Carrick has been working hard all across the United Kingdom. The 26-year-old midfielder worked as a roadie for his brother-in-law.

Carricks’ brother-in-law is a member of a rock band, known as The Sound, and has been touring parts of the United Kingdom over the past few months. The details of Carrick’s wage are unknown, and it’s possible the former West Ham midfielder even works for free.

"You can see the similarities between a band about to go on stage and a team about to walk on the pitch,ā€ Carrick said. "I love going to their shows, and you can get stuck in and lend a hand setting up. Their music is great so that always helps."

With the kick-off to the new Premier League season just over a week away, it’s back to business for Carrick. The England international undoubtedly enjoyed his summer job, as he revealed, but is most likely looking forward to resuming duties in the centre of United’s midfield.

Sir Alex Ferguson had recently admitted Carrick could be unavailable for Sunday’s Community Shield clash against Portsmouth, but the United boss has now given Carrick the green light to play after resuming training yesterday.

The part-time roadie picked up a virus over United’s preseason tour and has been absent from training ever since, but appears ready to play this weekend.

"Carrick trained yesterday for the first time and I'm taking him to Wembley," said Sir Alex. "Hopefully I'll give him some minutes on the pitch. If he is feeling good then we have to get some minutes on the clock for him ahead of next week against Newcastle."

It remains to be seen if Carrick will continue his role as a roadie next year, but for now, it’s time for the roadie to get back on the football pitch!
