Why I Am Psyched for the Olympics

Kevin CacabelosAug 8, 2008
Who isn't? This is the pinnacle of all sporting events in the world. The best athletes from all around the world gather at one place to represent their respective countries.
It's a beautiful thing. The blood, guts, and glory define the Olympics. From the suspenseful story lines to the record breaking performances, any casual sports fan is paying attention.
Here are a few reasons why I'm psyched for this year's 2008 Olympics:

Team USA Basketball
In the last Summer Olympics, the USA team shockingly lost for the first time ever, and subsequently ended up with a bronze medal. For the first time ever, it became evident that international-style team basketball could beat out super-talented Americans.
For once, the U.S didn't blow out every opponent making games look like exhibitions.Ā
Now the Americans are looking to bounce back with experienced talent from the last team (LeBron and 'Melo) along with new comer, Kobe Bryant. The new team has gained the moniker "The Redeem Team," for its expectations to return the USA Basketball back to the top of the world
Michael Phelps
Almost every Olympics has one athlete that is receiving unbelievable hype from the media and fans. If they live up to they hype, then they're the stuff of champions.
Michael Phelps is on a quest for a total of eight gold medals; that's right, EIGHT gold medals. Experts say it is quite within the realm of possibility, but it will be a challenge.
The single athlete with the most eyes on them before the games have even started is Phelps. Will he live up to the hype?
Track Stars
Doping, blah blah blah blah...Okay, the Track circuit has suffered a huge setback with several doping scandals *cough* Marion Jones *cough*. But who cares?
Let's try to forget about white rubbing cream and steroids and such, and try to enjoy the fastest human beings on earth for once. I just got into track by competing on my high school team this year, and I'm hooked.
The U.S has a megastar in Tyson Gay. Jamaica has two record holders in Asafa Powell and Usain Bolt. I can't wait for the 100 meter race.
Non-Mainstream Sports
Besides Track, there are some other sports that don't get a lot of airtime here in America. I'm looking forward to Weight Lifting, the Triathalon, Table Tennis, and Soccer.
Television and Online Coverage
NBC is making an unprecedented move in airing the most Olympic coverage ever. Along with NBC and several other channels, they'll be a lot of stuff on the internet.
The online video evolution that took place between 2004 and 2008, will enable a lot of the Olympics available online in real time. Oh, I love live highlights.
Oh yeah, and one last thing...I don't want to get political or anything...
