USA vs. Japan: Three Points and Even More Confidence

Clinton UtleyAug 8, 2008

Team USA defeated Japan early Wednesday morning to earn three points and now stand alone atop their group.

Stuart Holden fired a goal past the Japanese Goalkeeper in the 47th minute to seal the match 1-0.

Right-Back Marvell Wynne flew down the right sideline and whipped in a low cross that was poorly cleared by a Japanese defender. Stuart Holden put a one time shot on goal that was slowed by the Japanese keeper, but trickled over the goal line for the only score of the game.

Obviously earning three points in the first game of group play is a great way to start, but there were more positives than just the outcome.

One positive being Coach Peter Nowak’s experiment in playing Maurice Edu, who normally fits in as a defensive/holding midfielder, at center back alongside Michael Parkhurst. Edu not only performed capably, but stood out among his teammates with his confidence on the ball, quick decision making, and ability to stymie most of the Japanese forwards advances all match. Save for a questionable no-call late in the match, Edu played nearly spotless defense.

Jozy Altidore, the recently transferred Villareal $10M striker, was one glaring omission from the starting lineup. Altidore didn’t appear until the 84th minute to relieve the ageless striker Brian McBride.

The United States was able to control possession for much of the match, but there were some ā€œbrain fartsā€ from certain players on the pitch.

Left-Mid Robbie Rogers, although he possessed tremendous pace and timing, was extremely sub-par with his service and passing in general. Many times he was seen streaking down the sideline only to relinquish the ball and see a counter-attack develop in front of him.

Sasha Kljestan, playing alongside Michael Bradley in the center midfield, seemed a bit too antsy throughout the first half. His one time passing and general ball possession were sub-standard for a midfielder in Olympic play.

All in all, a tough fought victory for the United States has to be received with smiles. This team broke their three match scoreless drought and accomplished the most important goal – get three points from the first match.

MATCH GRADES

Brad Guzan (GK) – 7 – Controlled the box well and good anticipation, with really only had one minor slip-up on a botched attempted punch out.

Michael Orozco (LB) – 6 – Shut down most major Japanese attacks with his quick feet and confident defending. I would have like to see him push the wing more in attack.

Michael Parkhurst (CB) – 7 – Teamed well with Maurice Edu in not allowing much action in front of Brad Guzan. Played very much like 2007 MLS Defender of the Year.

Maurice Edu (CB) – 8 – In my opinion, Edu was man of the match. His decisiveness on the ball in every situation was very calming for the rest of his team.

Marvell Wynne (RB) – 7 – Provided a spark on the outside with his blazing speed and defender very capably in his area.

Stuart Holden (RM) – 7 – Scoring from the top of the box helped his confidence as well as his teams’. Displayed good on the ball skills and exuded confidence throughout the match.

Michael Bradley (CM) – 7 – Controlled the tempo of his team very well and distributed the ball to the correct teammate quite often. His steady foot will be needed the remainder of the tournament.

Sasha Kljestan (CM) – 4 – Poor showing for Sasha as high expectations were on his shoulders. Perhaps Benny Feilhaber should earn the start next to Bradley against Holland.

Robbie Rogers (LM) – 5 – Had flashes of great play but was never able to finish on his performances. If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. His speed on the flank will be much needed against Nigeria and the Dutch.

Freddy Adu (F) – 5 – A few shots, no headers won, and a couple of turnovers. Not a great day for Freddy, but with sub-par service to him, not much can be accomplished.

Brian McBride (F) – 6 – Drew fouls, had great positioning, and displayed amazing patience as he attempts to learn to play with teammates half his age.
