Watching the premiere of last night's season three of NXT and seeing pros the Bella Twins announcing their rookie, Jamie Keyes, really made me groan. I thought, why do they have to do everything together?! Don't get me wrong, I actually like Brie and Nikki Bella—but their whole twin schtick gets old after awhile.
Back when Brie Bella debuted on SmackDown!, I found her to be pretty cool and a good wrestler. Then, I read on a women's wrestling forum I'm an Administrator on, spoilers about how she and her identical twin, Nikki, were going to do the switch under the ring. When that episode aired on TV, I thought it was cute and even funny, and after Nikki was eventually revealed, I enjoyed their antics for awhile—a very short while.
The WWE actually did a smart thing awhile back, when they decided to split the Bellas up, having Nikki turn heel and join up with the Miz and John Morrison, while Brie remained babyface and teamed up with Carlito and Primo, the Colons. The six had a small, interesting feud, but unfortunately, the WWE apparently didn't see it in the same way the fans did. In mere weeks, the Bellas were reunited—minus an actual reconciliation, as the WWE acted as though they never split in the first place—and ever since, we've had to see them together every moment they grace our TV screens.
As I said, I do like the Bella Twins—especially Nikki, who is slightly better in the ring and whose photoshoots on WWE.com I seem to enjoy a bit more—but the WWE has absolutely no clue of what to do with them, and it's a definite buzzkill. Most of the IWC probably don't even like these two talented Latinas, but a lot of that could be due to their lack of individuality.
There is a definite problem concerning the divas on SmackDown!, what with the lack of faces at the moment. I mean, come on, with Beth Phoenix injured and Tiffany still out on suspension, Kelly Kelly could use a little help against LayCool. Instead of having the Bellas act as arm candy for RAW guest hosts and occasionally pulling the old switcheroo on poor Jillian on Superstars, how about splitting them up and moving a face Brie to SmackDown!? How about keeping the charismatic Nikki on RAW, turning her heel, and letting her have a feud with Eve or Gail Kim, neither of whom who are doing anything at the moment? It would work so long as the girls get their chance to show off their personalities. I think Nikki in particular could really rock the heel role and really show what she can do in the ring. If only the WWE would think outside the box.
As a duo, the Bella Twins are usually pretty bland and uninteresting. Their matches are also way too predictable. Case in point: the Bellas vs Eve and Gail Kim vs Jillian and Maryse in the summer spectacular triple-threat diva tag match on RAW earlier this summer—who didn't see the Bellas winning? A little separation where Nikki and Brie could show off their respective personalities as individuals could only do a world of good. Come on, WWE—don't you want the fans to like your darling token twins? Do us and them a favor and split Brie and Nikki up already!
