Wow, the Open Mic this week is a great opportunity for a Tiger fan to put together an all time team. Here’s my team with many subs included. It’s just too hard to pick sometimes. Also I may have switched the positions to make room for some guys mainly Tommy Cassanova who I moved to corner.

Offense:

QB: Bert Jones, JaMarcus Russell, Y.A. Tittle, Tommy Hodson, Rohan Davey

RB: Billy Cannon, Kevin Faulk, Charles Alexander, Jimmy Taylor, Dalton Hilliard

FB: Jacob Hester

WR: Eric Martin, Michael Clayton, Eddie Kennison

WR: Josh Reed, Wendell Davis, Dwayne Bowe

TE: David Lafleur, Brian Kinchen,

OT: Ralph Norwood, Robert Dugas

OG: Alan Faneca, Bo Strange, Stephen Peterman

C: Nacho Albergamo, Kevin Mawae, Todd McClure/Ben Wilkerson (tie)

OG: Erik Andolsek, Tyler Lafauci, Roy “Moonie” Winston

OT: Lance Smith, Andrew Whitworth

Defense:

DE: Marcus Spears, Gabe Northern

DT: Glenn Dorsey, Henry Thomas, Chad Lavalais

DT: Booger Mcfarland, Leonard Marshall, Kyle Williams

DE: Karl Wilson, A.J. Duhe

LB: Bradie James, Trev Faulk

LB: Mike Anderson, Toby Caston, Warren Capone

LB: Michael Brooks, Eric Hill

CB: Eugene Daniel, Mike Williams

CB: Corey Webster, James Britt

FS: Tommy Cassanova, LaRon Landry

SS: Greg Jackson, Jerry Stovall

Special Teams:

K: David Browndyke, John Corbello, Pedro Suarez

P: Chad Kessler, Donnie Jones, Patrick Fisher

KR: Kevin Faulk, Eddie Kennison

PR: Domanick Davis, Skyler Green

If any LSU die-hards out there want to compare lists, I’d love to hear your input. I’m sure my memory has me leaving some glaring omissions.

I was waiting for your take on the Open Mic....

I'm no Tiger fan, but I certainly can't argue with any of those picks. Superb talent there.

I like the way you put several people at the positions to review that actually covers a large period of Tiger football. One alltime team of a longtime SEC power I saw this week had only players from the past 15 years.

I will suggest one change on offense. Faulk out. Jerry Stovall in at running back. 1st Runnerup for the Heisman Trophy in '62 by 89 votes, 2nd player taken in the NFL Draft in 1963, and arguably the 2nd greatest player ever at LSU, you got him buried at safety where he played with the Cardinals in the NFL. He was a sensational running back at LSU, in my opinion from watching all of the fellows several times you've listed, he was better than any of them, including Cannon.

I will suggest one change on defense. Johnny Robinson, the brilliant 2 way player for the 1958 National Champions going at halfback and defensive back, and later 7 time all-pro Safety with the Kansas City Chiefs, should be moved into Stovall's vacating Safety position. Robinson and Cannon played at the same time in the same backfield and Robinson would regularly out perform Cannon. If I were to make an alltime SEC team from 1933-2008, Johnny Robinson would be my starting safety.

Do you realize how few schools can have an argument about who to start at all-time QB like the legendary Y.A. Title and the excellent Bert Jones? LSU is indeed fortunate to have such a glorious history to debate, in the artful hands of Justin Goar. Excuse me, with the arttful size 15 feet of Justin Goar !

thanks baby tate, i appreciate it. of course i tried to be as fair as possible. basically if you played before eric matin, dalton hilliard or tommy hodson, you were before my time so i tried to give credit to the older guys.

robinson was one that slipped my mind. i gave the nod to faulk because his name is all over the record books at LSU. but stovall was great and also went both ways. thanks so much for the input.

Damn good try at it Justin--but a few additions from an old school Tigah!

    TE--Doug Moreau--an All-American and Ken Kavanaugh--LSU's first All-American back in the 30's

At CB--I think you mean Mike Williams, not Chris Williams--Mike was LSU's first black scholarship player and an All-American

At either PR or KR, Robert Dow has to be there.

Drop either Trev or Bradie at LB, add George Bevan--All-American in the 60's.

Gene Daniel was a CB, not a safety, and at safety add either (or both) Jeffery Dale and Liffort Hobley.

    Love to read your stuff!!

      doug,
thanks so much. i'm limited by my age when picking an all time list and you made that evident. i meant mike williams, i'll edit that soon.

moreau was another guy that slipped my mind.

i'm embarrassed to say i don't know who robert dow is. my wrist needs to be slapped.

if i were to drop trev or bradie it would be trev. shame he left early, he probably could've cemented his place in history at LSU had he played his senior year. i'll also switch daniel and cassanova.

      thanks so much!!!!

No Colt David? Travesty. Kevin Faulk was ridiculous, one of the more underrated backs in SEC history even though he has the numbers to back it up.

Eddie Kennison was awesome, Josh Reed was the best receiver LSU has ever had.

I still have bad memories of LSU games in the mid 90's involving Kevin Faulk. I always hated him.

Good list. It's scary how many of the defensive players you listed played in the last decade.

I would add Jimmy Taylor at HB/FB, Remi Prudomme at OT and Jerry Stoval at HB.

Wow! The name Y.A. Tittle brings back some great childhood memories. I wasn't even aware he played at LSU. I remember him playing in the pros for the 49ers if I'm not mistaken, and later the NY Giants. He always looked like he was an old man with his glaring bald head, but he was a survivor. Tough as nails.

Thanks for the walk down memory lane. Great list.

Great list. It is very similar to the one I came up with a while back. I did go a little further back in time. I tried to consider how the individual performed in his era rather than how he would do now. A second factor I tried to keep in mind was his performance in college v his NFL/AFL career. QB and DT were particularly difficult positions to select. LSU has been DT U for many years. I had to leave such athletes as A.J. Duhe, John Wood, Ron Esthay, and Chad Lavalais off. While LSU has had many outstanding QBs, the Tigers have never had an Archie Manning, Joe Namath, Peyton Manning, or John Elway caliber QB. Y.A. Tittle and Tom Hodson were probably the closest full time QBs to this group. Had Bert Jones not split time in McClendon's two QB system and had Jamarcus Russell returned for his senior year, either or both may have joined the elite college QBs.

Having said all the above, this is the list I came up with:

    WR - Wendell Davis (AA - 1986-1987)
    WR - Josh Reed (AA - 2001 Belitnikoff - 2001)
    (WR) - Eric Martin (AA - 1983)
    OT - Lance Smith (AA - 1984)
    OG - Alan Faneca (AA - 1997)
    C - Marvin "Moose" Stewart (AA 1935-1936)
OG - Remi Prudhome (AA 1964)
    OT - Sid Fournet (AA - 1954)
    TE - David LaFleur - (AA - 1996)
    QB - Bert Jones - (AA - 1972)
    FB - Jim Taylor (AA - 1957)
TB - Doc Fenton (One of the all time greats of his era)

    DE - John Garlington (AA - 1967)
    DT - Fred Miller (AA - 1962)
(NG) - Anthony McFarland (AA 1998)
DT - Glen Dorsey (AA - 2006-2007 Multiple Awards)
    DE - Gaynel Tinsley (AA - 1935-1936)
    OLB - Mike Anderson (AA - 1970/George Bevan (AA - 1971)
    MLB - Warren Capone (AA - 1972-1973)
    OLB - Bradie James (AA - 2002)
    CB - Mike Williams (AA - 1974)
    SS - Laron Landry (AA - 2006)
    FS - Tom Casanova (AA - 1969, 1970 &1971)
    CB - Corey Webster (AA - 2003)

    P - Donnie Jones
    K - David Browndyke

    KR - Skyler Green
    PR - Craig Burns

No "Touchdown" Tommy Banks? That guy ripped my heart out and stomped on it in 1997. Banks scored a touchdown in an upset win over my favorite team: top ranked, and defending national champion Florida Gators. On the play, he dove into the end zone with safety Teako Brown draped on him, for a 7-yard touchdown that put LSU up 14-0. The Gators never recovered.

i was in the student section for that game and i also taped it. i replayed the sound of the crowd when banks crossed the goal line to make it 14-0 hundreds of times.

i guess he could make it on there but overall he didn't have the best career just some good games.

about the gators not recovering, they almost did but cedric donaldson's INT for TD was the real nail in that game.

Cedric Donaldson might have had the nail in the coffin, but Banks' TD sucked the life out of Florida that night. I remember watching it, and instantly thinking "they're done." That night was the epitome of LSU football: Saturday night in Death Valley, the Chinese Bandits, drunk cajuns, big home win---And I'm a Gators fan. I can't wait to see a game in Baton Rouge.

i couldn't agree more. that was one of the best games i've seen in death valley. last year's fla game too. that was one for the ages and was overshadowed by the fact that LSU played so many nailbiters last year (AU, bama, UK, ark, sec cg).

in fact in terms of drama i thought the 07 game was better than the 97 game.

Great list. I like you was not fortunate enough to watch the majority of these games, but I do have an orange end zone marker from the 97 Gator game. I currently have not missed a Gators/Tigers game the past 5 years as a good friend is an avid Gator fan.

it's funny, i've only missed two UF games in Baton rouge in the last 15 years or so (03 and 05.) the only one i've been to in gainesville was 98.

What about Binks Miciotto, Louis Cassio, Andy Hamilton, and Robert Dow. Without Robert's returns in 1975 LSU would not have gone to the Orange Bowl. Where is he today?
