Robinho to Chelsea: Signing of the Summer or Just Another Flop?

Barney CorkhillAug 7, 2008

Today, Chelsea has confirmed that they have put in an offer for Brazilian ace Robinho. Of course, the offer has yet to be accepted or rejected, but what if Robinho was to come to the EPL? Well, Cristiano Ronaldo would have a challenger for top trickster in the league that's for sure.

It is rumored that the offer is around the £20 million mark. Personally, I think they are going to have to offer a lot more than that for the Real Madrid man and I think Peter Kenyon and Luis Felipe Scolari know that as well.

Perhaps they won't need the reported £50 million when this rumour first started swirling, but if they get a player of Robinho's quality for £20m, then it'll be the deal of the summer, particularly as Madrid failed to get Ronaldo and therefore will be looking to hold onto their wingers.

But how would Robinho cope in England? Well, I think superbly. It may take a while for him to come to terms with the physicality and speed of play over here, but it's nothing he's never seen before and nothing he can't adapt to.

In Robinho, Chelsea may find a replacement for Arjen Robben, just an even better footballer and without as much cheating. Plus, his tricks and flicks will be able to entertain us all as well unless, of course, your team is on the receiving end.

He could be the perfect signing for Scolari despite having the likes of Flourent Malouda, Joe Cole, Shaun Wright Phillips, and Saloman Kalou. They are lacking that touch of pure class, someone that is a different level from all of their other wingers.

However, there is always the chance that he will be a flop here in England. It's unlikely, yes, but look at Andriy Shevchenko. Everyone, me included, was expecting great things when he came to the EPL, but, as of yet, it hasn't happened for him.

Could this happen to Robinho? Well, yes it could happen to anyone, but I don't think it will happen to him. If Robinho comes to England it bodes ill for all the full-backs out there, as he can turn anyone inside out.

At the age of just 24 he has already racked up 50 caps for Brazil. Joe Cole, Michael Essien, Deco, Michael Ballack, Frank Lampard, and Robinho sounds like a formidable midfield.

So Chelsea may have to offer more than they have put on the table so far, but I think it would be well worth it if they were to get him. Robinho could be the man to help take them back to the top of the Premiership mountain.
