Back in 1958, there were several events that will be remembered throughout football lore forever.
From the tragic Munich Air Disaster in which eight Manchester United players tragically died when the team plane failed to successfully take off to Pele leading Brazil to their first ever World Cup title against Sweden, 1958 has always been a very well known year for football fans everywhere.
However, there was one event that happened in 1958 that has yet to happen since in football: Schalke 04 being able to win the German Bundesliga.
During that magical year of 1958, Schalke were able to win the German Championship final by a 3-0 score over Hamburg to win their seventh German championship as they showed glimpses of greatness from the late 1930's with their title.
But since that title, Schalke continued to find themselves always come up short, as something always manages to stop the club from obtaining the Bundesliga title.
After a disappointing second place finish by one point to Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga last season due in large part to Schalke failing to win a major late season match to Bayern Munich despite being up a man late in the season, Schalke go into this season with tons of optimism.
Despite the recent departure of striker Kevin Kuranyi to CSKA Moscow, Schalke were able to make one of the most publicized moves of the entire summer as they picked up Real Madrid legend Raul to join their squad.
But that was not the final major move that Schalke have made, as Schalke have now acquired Dutch striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar from AC Milan on the final day of the summer transfer window.
Along with that, Schalke have acquired Atletico Madrid midfielder Jose Manuel Jurado on the final day of the transfer window to add some depth to the midfield.
Plus, American international Jermaine Jones will be back for Schalke this season after missing last season with a hairline fracture in his left tibula, which will make Schalke's midfield even stronger moving forward.
But now with these additions, one must wonder if Schalke will be able to win their first Bundesliga title in 52 years this season.
Despite getting off to a bad start this season with two losses in two matches to Hamburg and Hannover, Schalke have shown glimpses that they will overcome this bad start.
With some fantastic new talent on this squad plus a squad that for the most part is still intact from last season, this Schalke squad certainly is good enough to win the league.
But at the end of the day, Schalke have a great chance to win the Bundesliga this season despite having powers such as Bayern Munich and Werder Breman as formidable challengers in their way.
