Top Sporting Moments

Arya YuyutsuAug 5, 2008

Recently, I’ve witnessed the unbelievable: man exceeding his capacity to the extreme and what a stage for it to happen as well.

Yeah, all who saw last night's Wimbledon Men's Singles Final, are still breathless.

Federer and Nadal played tennis at an all-new level, reaching that brilliance no one knew existed. Seeing that I've decided to group together a few of such great sporting moments I've witnessed and been so exhilarated by.

Vamos:

Tennis - Wimbledon Men's Singles Final 2008:

Rafael Nadal beat Roger Federer, 6-4 6-4 6-7 6-7 9-7.

It wasn't just how tight this match was that made it so special and breathtaking, it was the quality of tennis exhibited by both players.

I'm still speechless and stunned.

Though, Nadal did win finally, playing some awesome tennis, my most memorable moment of the match was when Federer, match point down to Nadal's serve in the fourth set tie-break, hit a back-hand down the line to win the point; the ball just landing within the edge.

Cricket - South Africa vs. Australia (Wanderers, 2006):

AUS 434 - 4 in 50 overs lose to SAF 438 - 9 in 49.5 over!

Incredibly, two world records broke in one day.

Again, teams ranked No. 1 and No. 2 showed why they were right up there.

First, Australia achieved the impossible 400-run-barrier against the strong SAF bowling line-up, but then, lightning struck.

The best team in the world, the world champions, Australia were punished all over the park as SAF surmounted that ridiculous total with a ball to spare!

Soccer - UEFA Champions' League Final 2005:

Liverpool beat AC Milan on penalties— 3-3 at full time.

After a disastrous first half where Milan capitalized on some slow defending from The Reds giving the score line a biased 3-0 look, the game looked dead and buried.

That's when a Steven Gerrard inspired Liverpool and decided to show up and make a game out of nothing with three goals in six minutes to get the score line back to a tie.

The game kept swinging back and forth and only a fabulous double save off Sheva by Dudek from five yards out, forced Milan to play Liverpool in a penalty shoot-out for Europe's most prized club trophy.

With a save from his feet off Shevchenko, Dudek won it for Liverpool, marking one of the most remarkable comebacks in a major soccer match!

You'll Never Walk Alone...

F1 - Brazil 2007:

Raikkonen wins the Drivers' Championship with the last race left.

Three drivers had a chance to be the champion: rookie, Lewis Hamilton who stood with 107 points; teammate and world champion, Fernando Alonso with 103 points; and Kimi Raikkonen with 100 points.

It seemed all in favor of the rookie Brit, but needing only a third place finish to secure a dream debut season championship, he could only finish seventh with a gearbox problem early on.

Alonso, furthermore, finished third, finishing the season on 109 points, equal to Hamilton.

The wonder, was the flying Finn, who, being the underdog coming into this final race, not only had results go his way, but also performed flawlessly, winning the race and thereby the championship by a solitary point!

It was an incredible finish to one of the closest seasons in F1 history.

Gymnastics - Nadia Commaneci - Perfect 10:

Impeccable, unbelievable and perfect.

That's sporting history and excellence for you.

The first person to get a perfect 10 in Gymnastics!

Nadia Commaneci's beam figure was flawless, quite literally. I don't have to say much more.

Cricket World Cup 1999 Semi-Final:

Australia vs. South Africa— AUS 213 in 49.2 beat SAF 213 in 49.4; probably the heartbreaking moment of the CWC '99.

Man-of-the-series, Lance Klusener, had helped SAF get the late upper hand in a see-saw of a battle and needed just a run to win of three balls with only a wicket remaining in Donald, who was at the non-striker's end, not having faced a single delivery in their stunning 15 run last wicket partnership.

With three balls to go, Zulu punted one right to mid-off and set Donald on a suicidal winning run.

Donald was promptly run-out in the ensuing chaos and Australia were handed the victory despite the tie by virtue of there, having made the same total in fewer deliveries.

The Aussies went on to win the WC thrashing Pakistan in the Finals.

Rugby - New Zealand vs the Wallabies, Sydney 2000

(Submitted by Jim. Thanks mate!)

Within 5 minutes the score was 24 nil to the Kiwis, but at half time it was 24 all! In the second half each team would score one after the other. With only a few seconds left and the Wallabies up by a couple, Lomu scores in the corner. It's widely reguarded as the greatest game of Rugby Ever. Jim's team lost, but it ddn't matter to him, because that day, it was Rugby who won .
