Mike Adamle or Mike Adamale as Santino calls him, made a major announcement on the July 28th edition of Monday Night Raw that Batista and John Cena will meet for the first time ever in a one-on-one match at Summerslam. Adamle, the newly appointed Raw GM has taken the reigns of the WWE's flagship brand and certainly has made a name for himself as "The Man" who prefers his show "Shaken not stirred". While this isn't his only proclamation as the GM, this match up is sure to stand out on Mr. Adamle's resume, who else can claim that they brought you Cena vs Batista?
Many fans of the WWE would consider this a Dream Match, one for the ages, others see it as the begining of what could be WWE's most promising rivalry in quite some time, a relationship of "one upsmanship" as Michale Cole calls it. I see it as an opportunity for both men to cement their already established legacy, and take it a step futher, by living up to the hype.
John Cena has many times been referred to by bloggers as the most overrated wrestler, more of a student then a true Ring General, Batista has been seen as muscle-bound Animal who pounds his opponents rather than wrestles them. But no one can deny that both men have enjoyed in ring success, and have risen to the level of athleticism that defines champions, gaining experience, respect, championships and a following of fans in their wake.
The Irresistible Force meets the Immovable Object, may sound cliche, but then again we are talking about professional wrestling, cliche is the norm, and I wouldn't want it any other way. Although this is probably going to be the biggest match of the year, this is not the WWE's first venture into two Titans of sports entertainment doing battle. Many of the older readers will remember the "Mega-Powers" Hulk Hogan and Randy "Macho-Man" Savage doing battle at Wrestlemania V almost 20 yrs ago, or the very overrated Ultimate Warrior and Hulk Hogan Facing off a year later in what many call the Warrior's finest moment when he captured the title from Hogan at Wrestlemania VI. Those matches, with all the intensity of evenly matched opponents, and the fire and desire to be the top star makes them worth noting even today, Cena vs Batista will be talked about whether we like it or not for many unforeseen years.
Cena and Batista both had their shot at making statements about their upcoming Summerslam match, and the shocking match that Adamle had lined up for yesterday's Aug. 4th edition of Raw, where the two opponents teamed up to take one the Priceless Pairing of DiBiase and Rhodes for the Tag Team Titles. Cena stated that his match with Batista is one that he has personally and professionally been waiting for, Batista simply states that Cena will be his biggest obstacle, but obstacles are meant to be overcome. They seemed more intersted in their upcoming match then in the titles, and it was apparent in their match. DiBiase and Rhodes provided a good warm up for the Animal and the Chain Gang Commander, but it in the end it was Batista who ended the match with a spine-crushing Batista Bomb to pick up the titles. Cena then joined him in the ring with their newly won titles for a lengthy stare-down followed by each of them boasting to the audience for bigger pops, each trying to out do each other.
No one doubts that the match will be a classic, like The Rock vs Stone Cold, Hogan vs Savage, Hogan vs Ultimate Warrior, Brock Lesnar vs Goldberg, The Rock Vs Hogan.... and so many other match ups like them. Can these two unstoppable men step up to the plate and knock one out of the park? Will the FU rain over the Batista Bomb, or will a well placed Spear be the answer to the 5 Knuckle Shuffle? You may be asking yourself how I see this playing out, and all I can guarantee is that is will definitely be added to the list of matches that just make us sweat in anticipation. The truth is no one will know who is better till its all said and done, but if you ask me the WWE has been pushing Batista in the months leading up to Summerslam making him more ruthless and unstoppable then ever before with memorable matches with HBK and Edge, while Cena has fallen short in the last couple of months to guys like JBL.
Another question on everybody's mind is, can the coexist as allies and tag team partners till Summerslam, or will the implode and lose the title before then. The scenarios feel slightly nostalgic to the time when Cena and HBK won the tag championships from Rated-RKO before their Wrestlemania 23 match and imploded after which HBK cost them the titles purposely losing the match to hand the titles to the Hardy Boyz in a 10 men elimination match on Raw. Other notable teams with rivalries include, Matt Hardy and MVP, The Rock and Jericho during the Invasion Storyline, The Rock and Sock Connection, and the team of HBK and Stone Cold Steve Austin all respectively picking up Tag Titles during their heated rivalries. Will Cena and Batista be able to hold on to the titles or are they doomed to disintegrate like their predecessors?
Many questions still need to be answered, and not even Adamle can truly appreciate what he has triggered, a war.
