The Curse Of Texas Stadium Is Hurting The Dallas Cowboys.

Michael MohajeriAug 24, 2010

If you travel down to the old site of Texas Stadium, just outside of Dallas, you can hear voices of the ghosts of football past still moaning, "Why did you end it that way? What were you afraid of? Texas Stadium has put a curse on the Dallas Cowboys. You will never win another Super Bowl again!" But why are these voices speaking these words? What did the Cowboys do to deserve The Curse of Texas Stadium?

The story begins way back in 1996. As you may already know, The Washington Redskins and Dallas Cowboys rivalry is the greatest in all of sports. The Washington Redskins were playing their final game at RFK Stadium, a place filled with more history than most NFL stadiums. The Redskins made sure that the NFL scheduled their final game at RFK to be against the Cowboys. Even though the Redskins were coming off a 6-10 season and the Cowboys were coming off of their third Super Bowl victory in four years, the Redskins wanted to honor their rivalry, by giving the Cowboys one last chance to beat them in RFK.

The Redskins, dominated the Cowboys from the start of the game, allowing the Cowboys vaunted offense, a season-low 116 yards. This of the Troy Aikman-Michael Irvin-Emmitt Smith Cowboys. The final score was a 37-10 blowout, in which the Redskins and their fans walked away one final time from RFK stadium with an eternally satisfying end result.

Move ahead to 2008, the final year the Dallas Cowboys played in Texas Stadium. With a choice of when to schedule their game against the Redskins, the Cowboys chose an early season date, instead of what the football gods all wanted, a final game in Texas Stadium. Maybe Jerry Jones knew that the Cowboys would lose that game, because on September 28th, the Redskins walked out of Texas Stadium one last time with a hard fought 26-24 victory.

So, which team did Jerry Jones want to schedule the historic final game at Texas Stadium against? The Baltimore Ravens. That's right, not a division rival, like the Redskins, Philadelphia Eagles, or New York Giants. Not the San Francisco 49ers who they also played against that season at home. They chose a team that went 5-11 the season before, hoping to guarantee a victory in the home finale. The Cowboys were so pumped up that day, that they went out and lost 33-24 to the Ravens. The spineless decision that the Cowboys made backfired, and the Cowboys walked off the field with their heads hanging low.

And so the curse began that evening, on December 20, 2008. The curse that will haunt the Cowboys as long as they play in their new stadium. And the only way to end the curse, is to play the Washington Redskins in the stadium finale of the new Dallas Stadium.
