Some Thoughts On a Good Sports Weekend
Sometimes you have to sit and think about what happened over the weekend with a great cup of coffee and a biscotti from Starbucks overlook hole number one at a beautiful private country club. Here are my thoughts from a fun weekend in sports and other observations.
· Dustin Johnson has to know the rules, and he handled it like a champ. I'm glad he didn't sink the putt on 18 because now you are talking awkward. But I appreciate the way he took his medicine and probably will still be a Ryder Cup participant.
· I'm upset with the PGA. Yes, it's a rule; I get it. But I have two problems with the ruling. 1) You gotta tell Dustin that he is going to get a two stroke penalty before he takes that next shot. Not after the fact. 2) You can't have people standing, sitting, or scratching their butts in a bunker. If it's a true bunker, don't let people in there. You don't see people sitting in a bunker on any other hole do you ? Ridiculous.
· The St. Louis Cardinals disappoint me. You can't go into Cincinnati and sweep the Cincinnati Reds, snatch first place from them, and intimidate them. Then, go home and lose 2 out 3 to the Chicago Cubs. A Cubs team that is a step above the Little League squad from Toms River, NJ. Disgusting. They better be glad they got 9 games with Pittsburgh left.
· Gutsy call by Twins skipper Ron Gardenhire for pulling Kevin Slowley in the 7th inning in the midst of no-hitter. You got balls the size of church bells. I think you made the right call with Slowley's recent batch of elbow tendinitis but you have to wonder....
· What's Kevin Slowley thinking this morning?
· Bubba Watson- Would you really do the same shot over knowing what you know now? You say yes. I say whatever.
· Kyle Orton has nothing to worry about as far as a starting job for the Denver Broncos.
· Sadly, neither does Matt Leinart.
· The Colts look like they did last year. But if Peyton Manning goes down, the Colts may not even make the playoffs. There is a notable freakish drop off at backup.
· I think there are a lot of prayers circulating in Arizona Saturday night, and they were answered Sunday. Fortunately, it looks like Larry Fitzgerald is going to be ok.
· Torry Holt had a great hall of fame career, but this injury may end it.
· Aaron Rodgers should be the first quarterback taken in most fantasy leagues.
· Dennis Dixon should start the first four games in Pittsburgh.
· What's wrong with Tim Lincecum?
· Can the National League division races be any better? I think all of them are far from done.
· So who won the PGA championship? Oh wait. Martin Kaymer. Sadly, he won't be remembered for it. And yes Corey Pavin. You want Tiger on the Ryder Cup.
· Yes, the Redskins looked great this weekend, but I don't buy into the second coming yet. You were playing the Bills. I got 11 guys in my neighborhood that could beat the Bills. Don't pop the champagne yet guys. You have a ways to go from 4-12. And no Rex Grossman will not start over McNabb.
· Michael Vick has to remember this isn't playground ball. Two fumbles and an INT. You can't have that. You aren't the same Vick from a few years ago. Wait, maybe you are.
· I really hate preseason football. Seeing that injury to Stafon Johnson broke my heart. If you think about everything this kid has been throw from the crushed larynx incident at USC to this ankle injury. Sad.
· Prepare for a lot of Favre divaness this week. I can smell it in the air. His return is imminent.
· The NFC East could be really tough this year. The three teams we have seen have the potential to be strong, and tonight we will see what the New York Giants can do.
· The Tampa Bay Rays and Texas Rangers start a three game series today. This could be a playoff preview. Cliff Lee vs David Price is a great matchup tonight.
