2010 PGA Championship: Six Players With a Chance at Making History
Nick Watney leads the 92nd PGA Championship at Whistling Straits by three shots going into the final 18 holes on Sunday.
Nick Watney is a great PGA Tour Player with over $10,000,000 dollars in career earnings since turning pro in 2003.
This year he has almost $2,000,000 dollars earned, is 30th on the money list, and currently sits 28th on the FedEx Cup points standings.
Can he make history with his first major?
Rory Mcllroy is the most promising young player on the PGA Tour today.
Mcllroy won at Quail Hollow this season at age 21.
He has earned over $2,000,000 dollars already this season and is poised to make a run at player of the year with a win here, or later success in the FedEx Cup Playoffs.
Mcllroy is 23rd on the money list and 31st in the FedEx Cup points race.
Touted as the "next Tiger Woods", can he make history today at Whistling Straits?
Dustin Johnson almost won the U.S. Open already, but had one of those classic meltdowns on the final 18 that most pros experience at one time or another in their career.
You learn from those bad rounds and remember decisions and mistakes that got you those high scores.
Johnson won at Pebble Beach this season and is currently 13th on the money list,11th on the FedEx Cup points standings and is the best third year player on Tour, bar none.
He has over $7,000,000 dollars earned in just three years, and is also way over $2,000,000 this season. At just 25-years old, get used to this name.
This would be golf history if he can overcome the meltdown at the U.S. Open and win the PGA Championship in the same year.
Jason Day is a fabulous young player from Beaudesert in Queensland, New Zealand. At just 23-years old Jason is making his name known this season on the PGA Tour.
Jason Day won the Byron Nelson this season, and is 35th on the money list and 31st in the FedEx Cup standings.
Day has earned 4.2 million dollars already as a professional with almost half of that this season alone.
Will Jason Day make history today and get into the player of the year race?
Martin Kaymer is 26-years old and hails from Dusseldorf, Germany.
Kaymer turned professional in 2005 and has made over $8,000,000 in his career. That might be the best kept secret in golf.
Kaymer makes most of his money in Europe, but is a fine player. He has made six out of 10 cuts this season on the Tour and has earned $72,000 dollars this season.
This is a big one for Mr. Kaymer.
Martin Kaymer is not listed on the FedEx Cup points list at all, so this could get him in the hunt for a $10,000,000 payday as well a place in history with his first win being a major.
Wenchong Liang is 32-years old, and turned pro in China in 1999. I would like to know how he learned to swing?
Golf is 50-years old in China, and in its infancy in development of talent, availability of courses, and everything connected to this sport.
This is perhaps the most amazing story as a 10-year pro from China, with less than $2,000,000 earned in his career, tames Whistling Straits with a course record 64, then calmly speaks about showcasing golf for his home country.
If he could stun golf history with a win here, a huge following awaits in his home country of China.
Imagine the sales of golf clubs and equipment to the Chinese Government as they scramble to meet the huge demand for product in that country. I would like to handle that order.
These six players on top of the leader board have all never won a major!
One very good player, in Jim Furyk, has won, and he is waiting for any signs of a breakdown.
There are also many very low scoring players at minus seven to minus five that have the sticks to duplicate that 64 by Liang yesterday, which was a course record.
