Who Should Announce Formula One Races Next Year?
Warning: There may be some slight exaggeration in this article.
Will someone give James Allen a nice slap round the chops? Someone? Anyone? I cannot stand the man.
ITV's commentating of the Hungarian GP qualifying was below average in my opinion.
James Allen never said a sentence which didn't contain "Hamilton, dominant or unstoppable."
I follow Lewis Hamilton and I really want him to win the championship this year but James Allen hardly mentions any other driver during coverage of live action!
For instance, Massa's lap in part two of qualifying broke the lap record Michael Schumacher set in 2004. Okay, Massa was almost certainly very low on fuel but did Allen mention that? No sir, he didn't.
He didn't acknowledge the fact that Sebastien Bourdais had quite a good session, as he was further up on the grid than usual.
All Allen seems to care about is Hamilton, and it's starting to get on my nerves. I cannot wait until F1 returns to the BBC and James Allen isn't commentating.
On that matter, I have a couple of interesting ideas about who could commentate in 2009.
Damon Hill is standing in for Martin Brundle this weekend, and I feel that he did a pretty good job today. If we were viewing an on-board camera shot, Hill would take us through how a driver would take the corners, he would comment on whether or not a driver has taken the corner well, etc.
Obviously, Hill has many duties being the president of the BRDC but it would be pleasant if he could do some commentating now and then.
Partnering Hill would be Martin Brundle. I wasn't too sure on Brundle at the start of the season, but he seems to have grown on me a little and I would like to see him continue to cover the races in 2009.
The Hill/Brundle partnership would be quite effective, as both men have driven an F1 car before and both are quite experienced. One has won a world championship and the other has struggled at times. The combination would be impressive in my opinion.
Secondly, we all know that Coulthard is retiring at the end of the season and he may try his hand at covering live races. He has raced in over 200 Grand Prix and could provide an interesting insight during the race.
A Coulthard/Brundle partnership would also be very good.
Finally, it would be nice if the legendary Murray Walker would commentate for the BBC once in a while. Murray has already said that he isn't going to come back to do full-time commentating but mentioned that he wouldn't mind doing the odd race such as the British Grand Prix.
What do you think? Do you like James Allen? Who would you have commentating on Formula One next season?
