Is Luiz Felipe Scolari the Next Special One?
"I am a special one, and I am a champion of Europe." These words were uttered by Jose Mourinho as he took the helm at Chelsea. "The Special One" never ended up with that title, and it ended up costing him his job, some believe.
Now, with his replacement, Avram Grant, gone, the new gaffer, Luiz Felipe Scolari, went on record earlier this week and stated that he plans on winning a quadruple with the Blues this year.
Now, I am a diehard Chelsea fan, but for some reason, I cannot share his optimism. I would love to see the Blues lift four trophies this coming May, but with the squad that he will field, and his freshman stance at the reigns of the team, it would take a miracle from the God of soccer for the team to pull off a quadruple.
The team has had a wonderful start out of the gate, destroying teams on their preseason tour, but in all fairness, Wigan is more of a challenge than some of the teams they have been up against.
Scolari has a positive attitude, but he keeps relaying the same message that three-fourths of his team for the opening Premiership match is set, but the last one-fourth will have to prove themselves.
Scolari also stated that he feels that you need to build a team around a few players, but Chelsea is not exactly Manchester United. They do not have a Wayne Rooney or a Cristiano Ronaldo.
The mention of these two players is another challenge that Scolari's aged team will have to face. The Red Devils will be quite the force to deal with this season. The boys from up north will pose a significant threat to any team in the Premiership this season or in Europe for that matter.
So, when it comes down to it, what does that mean for Chelsea? If Scolari fails to win one trophy this year, he could be looking for a new job come May. What is worse is that he has stated that he thinks they can win four titles under him.
I don't have the numbers in front of me, but I cannot remember when, if ever, a team won a quadruple. So, with the season to come, I will cheer for my Blues and pray that their new manager revises his expectations before the going gets tough.
