A December To Remember: Miguel Angel Cotto vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

Fred KelleyAug 6, 2010

Without a doubt, 2010 has had its share of disappointments in the sport of boxing, and it's only August.

However, it looks like December holds promise of joyful gatherings and blissful jeering.

No, I’m not referring to the holidays. I am referring to the proposed match-up for Miguel Angel Cotto against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

Bob Arum, the promoter, founder, and CEO of Top Rank has announced the proposed fight for December 4th.

"That fight will happen, we're waiting on terms to be finalized and for the site, but Madison Square Garden is available, and that's great news," Arum told The Los Angeles Times.

Miguel Cotto (35-2-0) is coming off a TKO victory over Yuri Foreman in June for the WBA Light Middle Weight Title.

Cotto is clearly looking to maintain his momentum and regain his status as an elite competitor. Legendary Trainer and HBO Boxing commentator Emmanuel Stewart has begun training Cotto and looks to have improved some of his mechanics.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (41-0-1-1) is the son of legendary Mexican fighter Julio Cesar Chavez.  Chavez Jr. recently defeated Ireland’s John Duddy in a convincing unanimous decision for the WBC Silver Middleweight Title.

This was Julio’s first fight under the tutelage of the four time B.W.A.A Trainer of the Year, Freddie Roach.

The 24-year-old Chavez Jr. has been criticized for taking on weak competition during his 43-bout campaign. Duddy was his toughest challenge to date and it looks like Jr. is ready to step into the bright lights that once shone on his father.

I have high expectations for this. It has all the makings of a great fight.

There has always been a rivalry between Puerto Rican boxers and Mexican boxers, and these two fighters are clearly the sons of each nation.

They will not only be representing their respective countries when they step into the ring, but also carrying the weight of every legendary match up before it.

"It's a guaranteed sellout at MSG," Arum said.
