UFC 117: When Action Begins, Our Referee Will Not Be Big John McCarthy

Dale De SouzaAnalyst IAugust 3, 2010

So Big John McCarthy is not our referee for this fight here at UFC 117!

Sorry for the Mike Goldberg reference, but a California State Athletic Commission official made it official —the man who returned to refereeing duty in the UFC last night at UFC Live on Versus 2 will not be doing so again this Saturday.

No particular reason why; it's just that the man wasn't assigned to call any of the fights by the CSAC.

The man seen by many as "the best ref in the business" will have himself a night off while the "usual suspect" in the refereeing field will preside over some of the night's actions.

Don't pray that McCarthy referees the next event in Vegas, either.

He's not licensed in Nevada, but his application is on file, according to Keith Kizer of the NSAC.

Besides, they only keep a handful of refs on hand for each event and they rarely add any additional officials to the roster.

Three of the UFC's most prominent third men—Mario Yamasaki, Herb Dean, and Josh Rosenthal—are licensed in Nevada, as is controversial "third man" Yves Lavigne, referee Chris Tognoni, and "third woman" in the cage Kim Winslow, who presided over the rather hard-fought win Cristiane Santos scored over Jan Finney in San Jose.
