EPL: Breaking Into The Top Four, Who Can Do It?

Salaar ShamsiJul 31, 2008

Many people think La Liga or Serie A are actually more competitive then the English Premier League, "fair enough", I'd say.

Why do they think this?

It is because the gap between the Top Four (Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, and Liverpool) and the rest of the league is quite wide.

In recent years the likes of Everton and Spurs have been quite close to breaking this "deadlock" but it's about time somebody breaks into the Top Four.

Recently, Liverpool's decline in the domestic circuit has meant some supporters from the other three have been calling it the Big Three.

What I'm asking you is, who's it going to be?

I'll tell you what I'm going to do, I'm going to blot down some contenders and then I'm going to ask you which of them is most likely to break into the so called Big Four.

EVERTON

The Toffees have been sticking closest to the Big Four of late, coming in fifth place last season. They are sure-shot contenders to break into the elite of the Premier League.

A determined manager in David Moyes, who's organized his troops to great effect recently, a club full of passionate supporters and quality side featuring the likes of Mikel Arteta, Tim Cahill, Phillip Neville, Yakubu, and Joseph Yobo, Everton are surely a side to look out for.

BLACKBURN ROVERS

A small town club with less expectations compared to most, Rovers have recently gone through a change of managers losing "Sparky" (Mark Hughes) to Manchester City but now they have a fiery character in Paul Ince.

They've lost some of their big stars including David Bentley and Ince is struggling to hold onto Santa Cruz, but a side which finished seventh last season, Blackburn are always likely to raise some eyebrows.

NEWCASTLE UNITED

The biggest underachievers of all time? I've always felt Newcastle have never played to their potential.

It's about time, the long suffering Toon Army gets some sort of relief. With an aggressive manager in King Kevin Keegan, if they kick off from where the left off last season, they will be in with a chance.

The Magpies have the quality in Owen, Martins, Viduka, and Milner to portray my point, but can they is the real question.

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

The big-buying Spurs may have sold Keane and may even lose Berbatov but they've added Bentley, Modric, and Dos Santos to their cavalry.

They are now looking at Arshavin and a couple of other big players, they say "you can't ever buy the league" but Spurs are rejuvenated under Juande Ramos.

They look like a club with a mission. If not a Top Four finish, they should certainly improve from last season's 11th place finish.

PORTSMOUTH

Old Harry Redknapp is on a mission here. The FA Cup winners are only improving and continuing to threaten the big teams.

A deadly partnership may be formed between Defoe and Crouch which could see Pompey go a long way, they have experience in the form of Campbell and James with young talent in the form of Kranjcar and Davis.

Keep a close eye on Pompey who finished eighth last season.

Who have I missed out on? Aston Villa? West Ham?

Give us your thoughts on who is most likely to break into the Top Four.
