Let's Take a Look at the WWE Divas, Part 1: RAW Edition!

What's up B/R?! My name's Doreen, and I'm a new writer on here. I'm a huge sports fanatic! Besides Pro Wrestling, I enjoy NFL Football, UFC, MMA, the list goes on and on! Any who, when I finally got approved to write on here last week, I'd been trying to figure out a topic for my first article. After much consideration, I decided to go with the WWE Divas.

Why the WWE Divas, you ask? I'll explain:

By most wrestling fans, the WWE Divas are referred to as simply eye candy and nothing more. Their wrestling matches are referred to as bathroom breaks and fillers. Coined “smart, sexy, and powerful” by the WWE, most wrestling fans laugh this off and call it a cheap gimmick. These women are quite possibly some of the most least respected figures in wrestling today. So, why do an article about a topic hardly anyone cares about? Quite simply:

Due to whatever reason, there's only so much most wrestling fans chose to know about the WWE Divas. They see them on WWE TV week in and week out and viciously mock them for botching moves, messing up lines, etc.

What I aim to do with this first of two articles is take a look at the entire WWE Divas division, offer suggestions for improvement, and also inform the wrestling fans out there who could careless about these hardworking young women how accomplished some of them truly are, and how they're simply only being misused by the WWE. So without further adieu, let's take a look at the WWE Divas of the RAW roster!

Gail Kim

WWE Debut: June 30, 2003 at RAW.

WWE Re-Debut: March 30, 2009 at SmackDown.

Age: 33 (February 20, 1977)

Championships and accomplishments: 1-time WWE Women's Champion; 1-time, inaugural TNA Knockouts Champion

Heel or Face?: Face. She might get over with the crowd more as a heel if pushed the right way. Didn't she debut as a heel, and wasn't she more over with the crowd then, then she is now? Enough said!

Ring Work?: Excellent. 9/10.

Mic Work?: She isn't given much time to cut promos, so I'm gonna say 5/10 to be fair.

How Many Times Champion?: 2x

#1 Contender? Beyond this, yes or no?: I'd say yes, but WWE might think otherwise due to her lack of crowd reaction.

Manager/valet?: Due to her superb ring work, I'd say leave her as a wrestler. She has occasionally managed in her career though. Both in WWE and TNA. Molly Holly and America's Most Wanted (Chris Harris and James Storm) to name a few.

Still be in the WWE 5 years from now?: I truly doubt it, both because of her age and her lack of crowd reaction. Plus, with a bunch of girls in WWE's development territory, FCW, waiting to be brought up to the main roster, it's only a matter of time. I'd say 2-3 years tops, and that really is a shame.

Additional thoughts: In regards to her lack of crowd reaction, WWE honestly hasn't done anything with her to get the crowd to react. Winning matches are all well and good, and superb skills are a bonus, but to make it in the WWE, you've got to do more than that. Lets look back at her re-debut for a moment:

On the March 30, 2009 edition of Smackdown, Gail Kim makes her long-awaited return to the WWE as a fan favorite, interrupting a Divas Championship match between Maryse (champion) and Michelle McCool (challenger) by attacking both divas. Next week on Smackdown, she defeats Michelle McCool, and the week after that, she defeats Maryse in a non-title match. The following week, Gail Kim faces off against Maryse for the title, but due to the lack of crowd reaction, her push was canceled, and so Maryse retained the title. I think instead of having all these matches, they should have actually built some type of storyline with backstage segments, in-ring promos, or something. Matches are all well and good, but to get a crowd to care about someone in the WWE, you have to go beyond that and build character.

Nowadays, Gail Kim's getting about the same reaction as she did when she re-debuted so don't expect her to get a major title push anytime soon, which is sad for me to type but it is what it is.

Fun fact: Did you know…Pro Wrestling Illustrated ranked Gail Kim #3 of the best 50 female singles wrestlers in the PWI Female 50 in 2008?

Melina

WWE Debut: April 14, 2005 at SmackDown.

Real name: Melina Perez

Age: 31 (March 9, 1979)

Accomplishments: 3-time WWE Women's Champion, 1-time WWE Divas Champion

Heel or Face?: Face. She's been a face since mid-2008, but I honestly think she works better as a heel. She has more of a heel look to her than a face. I say turn her heel in a title feud sometime after she comes back, because she's been rather boring of late as a face.

Ring Work?: Better than most. 7/10.

Mic Work?: Doesn't cut as many promos as she used to, which is a shame because she isn't half bad on the mic. 7/10.

How Many Times Champion?: 4x

#1 Contender? Beyond this, yes, or no?: Beyond this for sure! WWE will always push Melina to a title feud to either put someone over and to have her win it herself. If she does come back as a face and isn't paired up with John Morrison again, she could be put in a ready-made feud with WWE Divas Champion Alicia Fox.

Manager/valet?: Previously managed MNM (Joey Mercury and Johnny Nitro) and Mick Foley to name a few. I'd say leave her as a wrestler though. She's too talented to be just eye candy alone.

Still be in the WWE 5 years from now?: Depends. Most divas don't last anymore than 6 years, and no, I'm not counting Lilian Garcia, because she was a ring announcer, not an in-ring competitor. I hope Melina's still in the WWE 5 years from now, but it's hard to say for sure.

Additional thoughts: Melina is regarded as the best WWE Diva on the roster right now, save maybe Beth Phoenix, and for good reason. She always gets a good reaction from the crowd, can cut a decent promo, and has great in-ring skills to boot. The only flaw I see in Melina is her track record of injuries of late. First, on the June 23, 2008 edition of RAW, during a tag team match with Mickie James against Victoria and Natalya, she took a bad bump off the top rope to the floor at ringside, landing on her feet and breaking her heel. This resulted in her being out for 5 months. Then, on December 29, 2009 at a WWE live event, during a 6-Diva tag team match, she tore her ACL and has been out ever since. Almost 7 months and counting. Now don't get me wrong, I know everyone gets injured, but I don't want Melina to turn into another Candice Michelle, where she's getting injured every few months or so and then when she's finally ready to come back, WWE gets rid of her. Now obviously, Melina is much more talented than Candice Michelle ever was and that's not knocking Candice Michelle, but still. I think if you get injured enough times, no matter who you are, rather it be a Diva or a Superstar, WWE will eventually get rid of you because there's no reason to keep someone on the roster who's spending most of their time on the disabled list.

Fun fact: Did you know…Melina made her first official WWE appearance on the November 29, 2004 edition of RAW when Randy Orton was the guest General Manager and hosted a diva lingerie fashion show? She also made another RAW appearance in December, participating in a limbo contest when Chris Jericho was General Manager for the night.

Jillian Hall

WWE Debut: July 28, 2005 at SmackDown.

Real name: Jillian Fletcher

Age: 29 (September 6, 1980)

Championships and accomplishments: 1-time WWE Divas Champion

Heel or Face?: Heel. She's been a heel most of her career and since early 2007. I say give her a different gimmick and turn her face. She's over enough with the crowd already, WWE needs to capitalize on that before it's too late.

Ring Work?: Better than most. 7/10.

Mic Work?: I'm going out on a limb here, but she's probably the best promo cutter of all the divas. And no, I'm not counting Vickie Guerrero as a diva. 9/10.

How Many Times Champion?: 1x

#1 Contender? Beyond this, yes, or no?: I'd say yes for her too, but WWE doesn't seem interested in pushing her for some unknown reason. She wouldn't even have to win the title, even though it'd be an added bonus if she did. If not, she could just be pitted with someone in a title feud to help put the other over.

Manager/valet?: Previously managed MNM (Joey Mercury, Johnny Nitro, and Melina) and John “Bradshaw” Layfield to name a few. Still, I'd leave her as a wrestler though.

Still be in the WWE 5 years from now?: I'd like to say yes, but you know how WWE's been of late. With all these girls in development, I don't think she'll still be in WWE come 2015.

Additional thoughts: WWE can't use the excuse that Jillian isn't over enough with the crowd to push her. She's way over with the crowd! She gets only slightly less boos than Vickie Guerrero does, and that's saying something. Because unlike Jillian, the crowd honestly does not like Vickie. I'll admit, even I don't like her as much as I used to. Her character's gotten kinda stale. One of the reasons, I actually don't miss Mickie James. But that's another subject for another time…

Fun fact: Did you know…Jillian Hall is a 12-time wrestling champion on the Independent circuit? Her reigns are as follows:

BWCW Women's Championship (1-time)

CIW Indy Women's Championship (1-time)

GLORY Championship (1-time)

HPW Cruiserweight Championship (1-time)

HPW Ladies' Championship (1-time)

MCW Mid-American Championship (1-time)

PGWA Championship (1-time)

SSW Women's Championship (1-time)

SWF Tag Team Championship (2-time – with Randy “The King” Allen)

SWF Women's Championship (1-time)

WWA Women's Championship (1-time)

Sorry, I just had to share that! This is very impressive to me, and the fact that she's only won one championship in the WWE and it lasted about 2 minutes is a slap in the face to everything she's accomplished as a wrestler. Granted, all of these accolades occurred outside of the WWE, but still…

Eve Torres

WWE Debut: February 1, 2008 at SmackDown.

Age: 23 (August 21, 1986)

Championships and accomplishments: 2007 Diva Search Winner, 1-time WWE Divas Champion

Heel or Face?: Face. I'd like to see her as a heel eventually. Will it ever happen? I don't know, but I think it'd be a nice personality swerve for her.

Ring Work?: Decent at best. 5/10.

Mic Work?: She doesn't cut promos much, does she? I think the only promo I've ever heard her cut was that one she did with Michelle McCool in early 2009, leading up to her in-ring debut. Going off that promo, and her being on commentary a few weeks ago, I'm gonna say I'm not impressed too much. 3/10.

How Many Times Champion?: 1x

#1 Contender? Beyond this, yes, or no?: I think that's what they're trying to do right now with her. They're trying to have her put Alicia Fox over until Melina comes back. Are they succeeding? I don't think so, because Eve's relatively new to the divas title scene just like Alicia is. It's kinda hard to have one newbie put another newbie over. The crowd's not buying it and neither am I. Hopefully, Melina will be back soon and they can stop using Eve to put people over, when in fact it's Eve that needs put over herself.

Manager/valet?: Previously managed Cryme Tyme and Chris Masters. I like her better as a wrestler, even if she's borderline annoying with her bubbly smiles and playing to the crowd. She reminds me of a Latino Kelly Kelly, and I'm not sure that's a good thing.

Still be in the WWE 5 years from now?: It's hard to say with her. I wanna say yes, but at the same time, I'm not really sure. Eve is popular, yes, but she's not that over yet. Sure, the crowd will cheer for her when she comes out, but I think for her to get over more, she needs some character development.

Additional thoughts: Like I'm sure many others do, I remember when Eve Torres was just the interview girl backstage, and now look at how far she's come! Granted, I'll admit I was very surprised by her win of the Divas Championship on Raw this past spring, but you can't deny she's come along way from being that simple interview girl. Rather Eve goes onto greater heights in the WWE, that's up to them to decide. But I think she's got what it takes. She'll do just fine.

Fun fact: Did you know…Eve Torres attended the University of Southern California on a full tuition scholarship? During college, she was one of the founding members of the Omega Phi Beta sorority chapter on her campus and held the vice-president position for several years. While in Omega Phi Beta, she was awarded for Academic Excellence at the Order of Omega Greek Awards, and graduated with honors and a Grade Point Average above 3.5 in May 2006, with a degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering.

Maryse

WWE Debut: February 22, 2008 at SmackDown.

Real name: Maryse Ouellet

Age: 27 (January 21, 1983)

Championships and accomplishments: 2-time WWE Divas Champion.

Heel or Face?: Heel. I'd actually like to see her as a face at some point. I know a lot of fans refer to her as the modern-day Trish Stratus due to the hair, the fact that she's Canadian, etc, so what better way to add to this then to turn her face. No time soon, mind you, but at some point. It'd be interesting to see if she could go back and forth and do both like some.

Ring Work?: Believe it or not, she's still pretty green in the ring to me. She can wrestle, don't get me wrong, but she only seems to know a certain number of moves, and after awhile of seeing the same thing match after match, it does get old. I guess the only reason I can notice this and not most is because when I watch her wrestle, I'm not hoping for a wardrobe malfunction like most. Sorry boys, it had to be said! 5/10.

Mic Work?: Isn't at all bad on the mic, especially when she's speaking French and we don't know what she's saying. That in itself adds to the heat of the promos she usually cuts. 7/10.

How Many Times Champion?: 2x

#1 Contender? Beyond this, yes, or no?: Beyond this yes, for numerous reasons. She's over with the crowd, has the look, is decent on the mic, and has decent enough wrestling ability to be in a title feud with anyone, to either put them over and put over herself.

Manager/valet?: Currently managing Ted DiBiase Jr. because, I'm guessing, he's not over enough with the crowd for the WWE's standards. So, how do you fix it? Pair him up with one of the most popular divas and you've got yourself a winner …or do you? Maybe it's just me, but I still don't think the Maryse/Ted pairing has enough chemistry to sell being a couple. Maybe it's because Ted is married in real life and he doesn't like the fact that he has to parade around with a woman that isn't his wife on TV. Yeah, it's acting, but there are some people who just don't like doing that. Whatever the case, I don't see this pair going away anytime soon, and that may or may not be a good thing for the two of them. Only time will tell, I guess.

Still be in the WWE 5 years from now?: I think she will. She has age and crowd support on her side, so I don't question this at all. Of course, as Matt Striker says, anything can happen in the WWE, but I really don't see any reason why she shouldn't.

Additional thoughts: Maryse is without a doubt the most popular diva to come out of the Diva Search Contest. And while I may not be a huge fan of her myself, you can't deny the girl's way over with the crowd and works hard at what she does. So, will she be the next Trish Stratus? Maybe. Does she have what it takes to be the next Trish Stratus? Perhaps. But at the same time, I think people get too caught up in someone being the next this and the next that, that they lose sight of the person themselves. Rather or not Maryse will be the next Trish Stratus, I think Maryse will do just fine being Maryse, and has a bright future in the WWE.

Fun fact: Did you know…Maryse has a degree in Business Administration and holds a black belt in martial arts?

Natalya

WWE Debut: April 4, 2008 at SmackDown.

Real name: Natalie Neidhart

Age: 28 (May 27, 1982)

Championships and accomplishments: In WWE, 0. Outside of the WWE, 1-time NWA: Extreme Canadian Championship Wrestling SuperGirls Champion, 2-time Stampede Wrestling Women's Pacific Champion.

Heel or Face?: Face. She's good as either, and debuted as a heel. I'd eventually like to see her turn heel again and leave the Hart Dynasty, as I feel they're holding her back as a singles star.

Ring Work?: Superb wrestler, and probably the best technical wrestler of all the divas. 8/10.

Mic Work?: This girl can cut a promo, she's just not given the opportunity much. But from what I have heard from her in backstage interviews and in-ring promos, 8/10.

How Many Times Champion?: In WWE, 0x

#1 Contender? Beyond this, yes, or no?: I say she's way beyond this, but the fact that she has yet to win any championship in the WWE means they don't feel the same. I think the only time in the near future she's gonna get a shot at either the divas or women's championships is after she leaves the Hart Dynasty, and who knows when that's gonna be. This writer wants this to be hopefully, sooner rather than later.

Manager/valet?: Currently managing Tyson Kidd and David Hart Smith of The Hart Dynasty. Previously managed Victoria. This girl seriously needs to stop being used in valet/manager type role, because unlike some of the other divas, she can actually wrestle.

Still be in the WWE 5 years from now?: I think she's the only one on the roster I can honestly say will indeed be around 5 years from now due to her skills, as well as her family connections. This girl is not going anywhere anytime soon!

Additional thoughts: To this day, I can't figure out why Natalya wasn't pushed to be the inaugural WWE Divas Champion at the Great American Bash two years ago. Nothing against Michelle McCool, but having Natalya win the belt could've been the start of a really great feud between the two, where Natalya could've eventually dropped the belt to Michelle at a later date. But thus, this didn't happen. Suffice to say, I really think WWE dropped the ball on that feud because it could've been so much more. Since then, Natalya has had no other shots at either of the WWE's women's championships, be it the divas title or the women's title, and this just makes no sense to me. Unlike Gail Kim, who isn't over with the crowd, yet still gets title shots, Natalya is way over with the crowd, and when she wrestles, people actually pay attention because they know she can. So why is it that over two years into being in her WWE career, she still has nothing to show for it? Sure, managing the Hart Dynasty to a tag title win is cool and all, but why not have her compete for the divas title in addition to this? Maybe at some point, she will turn heel and leave the Hart Dynasty like I suggested above, but in all honesty, I don't see that happening anytime soon, and that really is a shame.

Fun fact: Did you know…Natalya has been dating T.J. Wilson (Tyson Kidd) since November of 2001?

Alicia Fox

WWE Debut: June 13, 2008 at SmackDown.

Real name: Victoria Crawford

Age: 24 (June 30, 1986)

Championships and accomplishments: 1-time WWE Divas Champion (Current)

Heel or Face?: Heel. I like her as a heel and I'm not sure I could see her a face. Her gimmick as a sly fox wouldn't work too well under the restrictions of being a face. Still, I think she could pull it off if called upon.

Ring Work?: Oftentimes sloppy, but I think she tries her best. 4/10.

Mic Work?: Not bad from what I saw of her little interview with Josh Matthews. Actually, I think that's the only promo I've ever heard her cut, until next week's Raw, as that make out footage with Edge doesn't count (ha ha, I couldn't resist not bringing that up!).

How Many Times Champion?: 1x

#1 Contender? Beyond this, yes, or no?: She's in her first-ever reign as a champion, so I'm gonna say maybe. Give her a few years, and she'll be putting people over like the rest of them…or not. Depends on how much she advances as a wrestler.

Manager/valet?: Previously managed DJ Gabriel, Michelle McCool, and Zack Ryder. I actually think WWE dropped the ball on the whole Michelle/Alicia partnership, because I think it could've been so much more. No offense against Layla, but I think Michelle/Alicia worked so much better than Michelle/Layla does. But again, that's just me.

Still be in the WWE 5 years from now?: I'd like to think so. Especially since WWE officials have been so high on her lately.

Additional thoughts: My, my, Alicia! Two years ago at WWE's July PPV, The Great American Bash, you were cat fighting with Vickie Guerrero in the middle of an Edge/Triple H WWE Championship match. Two years later, at WWE's July PPV, Money in the Bank, you're defending and retaining the WWE Divas Championship with two straight PPV victories under your belt. Not bad says I!

Fun fact: Did you know…on October 4, 2006, Alicia Fox, going by her real name, Victoria Crawford, captured the OVW Women's Championship at a house show, but the reign was not recognized and thus lost it the next day to Beth Phoenix in an 8-woman elimination match?

Brie Bella

WWE Debut: August 29, 2008 at SmackDown.

Real name: Brianna Garcia

Age: 25 (November 21, 1983)

Championships and accomplishments: None, thus far.

Heel or Face?: Face. Her sister pulled off being a heel. She probably could too.

Ring Work?: Decent at best. 4/10.

Mic Work?: She and her sister aren't known for cutting promos, though the few times I've heard them on the mic, they weren't that bad so I guess I'll give them a 5/10.

How Many Times Champion?: 0x

#1 Contender? Beyond this, yes, or no?: Definitely not! I don't think she nor her sister will ever get a shot, let alone win, championship gold in the WWE unless the women's tag championship of the late 80s/early 90s is brought back.

Manager/valet?: Previously managed Carlito and Primo Colon. Leave her and her sister as wrestlers, I say. They're not that bad. I'd have them train with some of the more experienced girls to gain more skills.

Still be in the WWE 5 years from now?: I think she and his sister will, but it depends. WWE seems fascinated with the fact that they have twin divas on the roster, so that might work in their favor. But for how long?

Additional thoughts: The Bella Twins are definitely a first in the WWE. To my knowledge, they're the first-ever twin female wrestlers in sports entertainment history but I could be wrong. I remember when they debuted two years ago. I'd just started watching SmackDown regularly every week. Brie debuted first, and then a few months later, Nikki debuted. Brie had been in a program with Victoria, and later Natalya, where for weeks she would go beneath the ring and swoop with her twin to win matches. That was then, this is now. Not much has changed with the Bellas. They still do the switcheroo act to win matches but not always. Yet now they're referred to as the “Bella sluts” or the “guest host's hoes” by wrestling fans the world over due to their continued presence on the arm of whomever's guest host on Raw. Is this right? No. Will it stop? Maybe, but does it matter either way? I guess not. People are gonna say whatever they wanna say, because everyone has a right to their own opinion. Still it's kinda mean-spirited, but I guess whatever. Brie and Nikki Bella, no matter what anyone wants to call them, are living their dream in the WWE as Divas and are rather entertaining at that. They're decent at best in the ring, and not at all bad on the mic. So stop the Bella Twins hate. K, thanks! At least they're not blonde Barbie dolls like most of the other divas.

Fun fact: Did you know…Brie and Nikki Bella played soccer up until college, when they started modeling, acting, and doing promotional work?

Nikki Bella

WWE Debut: November 7, 2008 at SmackDown.

Real name: Stephanie Garcia

Age: 25 (November 21, 1983)

Championships and accomplishments: None, thus far.

Heel or Face?: Face. I liked her as a heel and throughly enjoyed the Bella Twins split from last year. Too bad it couldn't of lasted longer.

Manager/valet?: Previously managed John Morrison and The Miz.

Fun fact: Did you know…Nikki and Brie Bella participated in the 2006 WWE Diva Search, but did not make the cut?

Tamina

WWE Debut: May 24, 2010 at RAW.

Real name: Sarona Reiher

Age: Unknown, I'm assuming early/mid 20s.

Championships and accomplishments: None, thus far.

Heel or Face?: Heel. She just debuted so I don't think we'll be seeing her as a face anytime. Nor do I think she could pull it off.

Ring Work?: I haven't seen her wrestle much, just once, and I don't really remember the match itself. So I'm gonna say 5/10 to be fair.

Mic Work?: Not bad from what I've heard. I'll give her a 6/10.

How Many Times Champion?: 0x

#1 Contender? Beyond this, yes, or no?: No, not yet. She just debuted. Give her a few years, then maybe yeah.

Manager/valet?: Currently managing Jimmy and Jay Uso. Considering the fact that she only started wrestling last year, I actually like the fact that she debuted as a valet and not a wrestler. Keep her this way for awhile until she gets more advanced in her skills.

Still be in the WWE 5 years from now?: She just debuted, so I'd like to say yeah. And the fact that she's still training in FCW says a lot. But, you never know.

Additional thoughts: I couldn't find much information on Tamina, except that she's the first female wrestler to come out of the Samoan Wrestling Family and she previously worked for World Xtreme Wrestling last year. With that said, I don't think I have much else to say about Tamina that wasn't already said.

Fun fact: Did you know…Tamina is the daughter of WWE Hall of Famer, Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka? Yeah, you knew that but I just had to share it anyway! In all seriousness though, there isn't much information about her anywhere on the net so I had to think of something!

In closing, I'd like to thank everyone for taking the time to read my article. Rather or not you agree with some of my views, leave comments anyway. I won't bite, I promise! I'm very curious in what you all have to say! Lets Take a Look at the WWE Divas, Part 2: SmackDown Edition should be up sometime later today, so if you liked this article, be sure to check out that one as well via my B/R page.
