The Greatest Wrestler Ever: Ric Flair or Kurt Angle?
No matter what, the one question that wrestling fans can never agree on is.
Who is the greatest wrestler of all-time?
The first name that pops into my head is "The Nature Boy" Ric Flair, a 16 time World Heavyweight Champion, Ric Flair has made himself into a living legend among pro wrestling fans around the globe.
You would think that the answer to this question start and end with "Naitch", well, unless you haven't been watching wrestling for the past decade, it's pretty hard to ignore what the "Wrestling Machine" Kurt Angle has done in the sport.
A Olympic Gold Medalist, Kurt Angle has proven to the world that he deserves his name to be mentioned up there with the all-time greats.
No offense to all the; Shawn Michaels, Bret Hart, Ricky Steamboat, etc fans, but I feel like the answer to this question is between these two entertainers.
Why? Both have been the top performers of their respective generations. Both have also fought through injuries and have been able to put on main event level matches even late in their careers.
So, in this article I will make a case for why Ric Flair should be left alone at the top and why Kurt Angle should finally get some love.
I hope this can be a entertaining and fun debate for the IWC.
Arguement For Ric Flair:
I began watching wrestling when I was a 5 year old in 1985 and back then besides Hulk Hogan, it was like the greatest star in the world was "The Nature Boy" Ric Flair.
Brilliant promos and segments put him on a level higher then anyone else, mic wise.
From him creating "The Four Horsemen" back in 1985 to now, "Flair and Fortune" in 2010. Ric Flair has almost given his entire life to the business.
But, longevity and killer promos should not be the only reason why Ric is the best ever.
"The Nature Boy" would have 'beautiful' rivalries with Randy Savage, Hulk Hogan, Bret Hart and his long time in-ring enemy Sting.
His match at WCW's "Clash Of The Champions" against Sting and his match against Ricky Steamboat at "WrestleWar 1989" are considering to be one of the very few "5 Star" matches in wrestling history.
With all this success, titles came by the dozens to "Naitch" (literally).
Ric was a winner EVERYWHERE he went.
A seven time NWA World Heavyweight Champion, eight time WCW World Heavyweight Champion and two time WWE Champion.
Ric has the all-time record for most Heavyweight Champinoships and because of the tremendous respect pro wrestling promotion owners have for Ric, he will most likely keep the all-time record and not let another performer get even two titles within the record.
There is one thing that will never show up on Ric's resume though, the man's pure toughness.
How many times have we seen "The Dirtiest Player In The Game" be busted wide open ?
When you look at his face, you can clearly seen a line running on his forehead, that is a scar from all the times he has bleeded in the ring.
He has received praise from his piers; Triple H, Shawn Michaels and Dave Batista have publicly acknowledged his impact on their careers.
Oh yeah, he started that also.
So, all these accolades equal him being given the nickname of "GOD"
Arguement For Kurt Angle:
In this day and age of wrestling, it's very hard to find a guy that has the "look" and the amazing wrestling ability.
Fortunately, we have found that combo in the form of a Kurt Angle
It's no suprise, as a amateur wrestler he was a legend. A former Olympic Gold Medalist in amateur wrestling but, what might be even more impressive is that he won it with a BROKEN FREAKIN NECK !
All that is great but, how would Angle fair in a pro wrestling ring ?
He was okay, I mean he wouldn't do anything exciting his rookie year in the WWE except for winning the WWE Championship againest The Rock !
In a ten plus year career, Kurt would show his skills off againest some of the WWE's greatest stars, guys like; Shawn Michaels, The Rock, Stone Cold and John Cena.
His most memorable matches could be againest Brock Lesnar, the two would trade the WWE Title on a couple of occasions in 2003.
Angle gave a few certified 5 Star matches in the past decade, here are a couple; Wrestlemainia 21 vs. Shawn Michaels and Wrestlemainia X9 vs. Brock Lesnar.
Matches are one thing, how do Kurt's achievements compare with Ric's ?
Well, Kurt is the only man in history to have held the WWE Championship, World Heavyweight Championship, WCW Championship and TNA Championship. The only other man that can ever accomplish this feet is Chris Jericho.
When Angle went over to TNA, it's one thing to be the face of the company (which he was) but, its another thing to be the company.
In the summer of 2007, Kurt Angle would hold every male title in TNA; the X-Division Title, Tag Team Title and TNA Championship.
In total, Kurt has held ten major championship and if you include the IWGP Title, that would be eleven.
Much like Flair, toughness runs through Kurt's veins, it's no mystery, we have seen him come back from 3 or 4 neck injuries and wrestle when he is in serious pain.
Oh its true, ITS DAM TRUE
I love Ric Flair and I feel like when Hulk Hogan was running around being Superman, Ric Flair was keeping the dignity of the business intact.
By the same token, I love Kurt Angle, he was and is wrestling in a era where it matters more about the "look" and not about the actual ability. He has kept the prestige of the profession when you have; John Cena, Randy Orton and others running around with the Heavyweight Title.
But, I would be a little bit of a hypocrite if I didn't pick a side.
Since, the title clearly says WRESTLER, I have to go with "The Wrestling Machine" Kurt Angle.
He has been able to make very limited wrestlers like; Mark Henry, Batista and others look good in the ring.
This might be a bold statement but, I don't think Angle has ever had a bad match in his career.
Now, the better career has to go to Ric Flair, the man has bleeded in the ring when other guys his age are in retirement homes and he has put guys over throughout his entire career. Hell, Ric can still put on a good match.
I amn't knocking Ric at all, I just feel Kurt Angle is a guy that could do ANYTHING in the ring.
You can choose to side with either one, reality is, when both retire from pro wrestling, we won't ever find replicas of these two legends.
Please be sure to vote on the poll. I really want to know who you guys side with. And, remember it is about the better WRESTLER is.
