Getting Old: Baseball's Most Experienced Players No. 10 - No. 6
Kevin CacabelosJul 29, 2008
At age 41, Smoltz has racked up 20 big league seasons after debuting in 1988. In the 90's he dominated as a starting pitcher, winning the Cy Young in 1996 and being selected to the All-Star game on four separate occasions.
However, in 2001 Smoltz switched to working in the bullpen and had great success there as well, leading the NL with 50 saves. Smoltz recently had season-ending surgery on Jun. 10, it is a possibility that 2008 may be Smoltz' last season.
Will he make the Hall of Fame? Yes
No. 9—Omar Vizquel 2642 games, 20 seasons
Born in 1967, Vizquel has passed the 40 year old mark and has played a total 20 seasons in the Major Leagues. Vizquel is tied for the second most all-time gold gloves at the shortstop position with Hall of Famer Luis Aparicio.
He has the highest fielding percentage at the Shortstop position ever at .984%. He has also played the most games at the Shortstop position ever.
Will he make the Hall of Fame? Maybe
No. 8—Kenny Rogers 753 games, 20 seasons
Although known as "The Gambler", Rogers has not taken any foolish chances with his career and is still around at the young age of 43.
Rogers has won five gold gloves in the current decade, he is the all-time pick off leader with 93 pickoffs. Since his last All-Star season in 2006 his statistics, in the past two years they have slowly declined.
I think at max he has two years left in him.
Will he make the Hall of Fame? No
No. 7—Ken Griffey Jr. 2478 games, 20 seasons
How much does this living legend have left in him? At age 38, I'd say five more years maybe even more. It'll be interesting if his now often-injured body will be able to hold up past 43 though. Will he become a Seattle Mariner in the near future?
I don't think so, when a new GM takes over, he'll only add Griffey if he'll be a positive impact to a contending team.
Will he make the Hall of Fame? Shoe-in
#6—Tom Gordon 887 games, 20 seasons
At the age of 40, Gordon has played seven different major league teams in 20 big-league seasons. He is the only pitcher in baseball history with 100 wins, 100 holds, and 100 saves.
On Jul. 6, Gordon was placed on the DL. This season so far has been his worst ever with a 5.16 era. Out of all the people on this list, I believe Gordon is the most likely to retire after this season.
Will he make the Hall of Fame? No
