The SEC's Impact Freshmen 2008
Every year in the SEC, there are a few freshman that light up the football field right from the get-go. Last year, Terry Grant and Knowshon Moreno did their part in keeping that theme alive. SEC Sports Hub takes a closer look at who this year's impact freshmen are most likely to be.Ā
A.J. Green, Georgia, WRāGreen might be one of the most talented prospects in the nation this season. Entering a relatively weak Georgia receiving corps, he should quickly become a staple for quarterback Matthew Stafford and the Georgia Bulldog offense. Expect to see him on some highlight reels at ESPN before the season is over.Ā
Jerrell Harris, Alabama, LBāHarris will benefit from Alabama's issues at linebacker, where the Crimson Tide are now severely thin. Harris will likely come in and start right away. He's one of the best natural athletes entering the SEC this year, and if he can pick up the mental aspect of the college game, he could have a Rolando McClain-like freshman campaign.Ā
Jarrett Lee, LSU, QBāLee is battling Harvard transfer Andrew Hatch for the starting quarterback job for the defending National Champions. The battle will likely last into the first few games of the season, so Lee will have to prove his value on the field right away if he wants to be the signal caller for the Tigers this year.Ā
Chris Rainey, Florida, RBāRainey is an electrifying athlete that sat out last season with a medical redshirt (shoulder). He will be one of the Gator's main playmakers and is, without a doubt, one of the fastest players in college football. Opponents will have a world of trouble keeping him locked down in 2008.Ā
Enrique Davis, Ole Miss, RBāDavis is an extremely talented prospect at running back. He has the potential to be a starter or key contributor for the Rebels, but will have to fight his way up the depth chart against some other talented running backs. Davis is a big powerful back with great speed and vision.Ā
Julio Jones, Alabama, WRāJones is the prized gem in Nick Saban's great 2008 recruiting class. Although Alabama is not as weak as many people think at wide receiver, Jones will still have the chance to come in and start right away based on his potential alone. How fast he develops will determine just how key he is to the Alabama offense.Ā
Charles Mitchell, Mississippi State, SāMitchell was the best prospect in the state of Mississippi last year and he will likely contribute right away for the Bulldogs in 2008. He's talented enough to play on both sides as well and coach Sylvester Croom won't hesitate to use him there if the offense is struggling. He's physically ready to play college football already.
