The Pirates have agreed to a deal sending Damaso Marte and Xavier Nady to the Bronx for reliever Ross Ohlendorf and a few other prospects, which means the Pirates will go to their third closer of the season.
Looks like left-hander John Grabow’s next in line to be closer, so pick him up for some free saves the rest of the way (righties are hitting just .220 against Grabow this year). The Pirates won’t win many games, but the games that they do win should be close, giving Grabow around 10-15 saves hopefully.
The next two teams to unload their closers will probably be the Rockies and the A’s….in case you’re wondering, Joey Devine (about to come off the DL) is next in line in Oakland (according to The San Francisco Chronicle), while Manny Corpas will take over in Colorado if (and when) Brian Fuentes is dealt. Scoop Corpas now if he’s available, and if you’re really desperate for saves and have a flexible roster spot, grab Joey Devine, too.
